Job Description Classification Title:
IT Generalist II
Classification Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area and two years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Strategic Technology Oversight and Management – Provides strategic leadership for all technology functions that enable the Astraeus Space Institute’s research, mission operations, and academic programs. Develops and implements technology plans aligned with Astraeus’s scientific and operational objectives, including support for the Mission Operations Control Center (MOCC). Establishes and maintains robust IT operational, cybersecurity, and data‑governance policies that align with UF standards and applicable federal and commercial requirements relevant to space research activities. Ensures Astraeus systems, networks, and technical processes meet the technical expectations of mission‑critical environments, including after‑hours operational monitoring and response protocols.
Research Data, Mission Data, and Scientific Computing Support – Supports faculty, staff, and research teams by providing high‑availability hardware and software platforms for scientific data collection, high‑volume data transfer, storage, mission telemetry archiving, modeling, and analytics workflows. Manages secure research data pipelines and ensures compliance with UF policies, federal research standards, export‑control considerations, and sponsor requirements related to space mission data. Works with campus units to source virtual computing resources and specialized computing environments necessary for Astraeus research and mission activity.
Customer Support and Operational Reliability – Oversees desktop/laptop support and general IT services for Astraeus personnel. This includes configuration of workstations, printers, peripherals, hardware and software; subsequent maintenance, lifecycle planning, monitoring, and troubleshooting of installed equipment and software; and receiving, prioritizing, scheduling and addressing help requests. The selected candidate must ensure rapid response and accurate diagnosis of hardware and software systems in a complex, hybrid research and mission‑control environment. Supports mission‑control operator stations, display systems, and technical consoles with an emphasis on minimizing downtime, especially during active mission operations or external partner collaborations.
Advanced Systems Infrastructure and Real‑Time Operations Support – Manages Astraeus’s high‑performance computing and networking environments, including the specialized infrastructure required for real‑time mission tracking, telemetry display, and communication with federal and commercial space‑flight partners. Works closely with UFIT, external vendors, and federal partners to provision secure high‑bandwidth connectivity and maintain 24/7/365 operational posture for the MOCC. Oversees server infrastructure, virtualization resources, storage systems, firewall and ACL provisioning, large‑scale display systems, and remote‑access environments. Responsible for role‑based access control and ensuring system reliability during active mission windows.
Web, Portal, and Mission Information Interfaces – Manages and coordinates Astraeus’s web presence, dashboards, and mission‑status interfaces. Oversees vendor relationships or campus partnerships required to maintain online resources that support faculty, researchers, and mission operations personnel.
Software and System Licensing Management – Manages the purchase, installation, renewal and compliance of software licenses for computing customers, including specialized mission‑support and scientific‑analysis applications. Ensures all licensing meets UF standards, vendor requirements, and sponsor compliance obligations. Facilitates the UF software risk assessment process and implements recommended security posture from UF Information Security.
Other duties as assigned – Supports special projects, operational improvements, mission‑critical activities, or other duties as assigned by Astraeus leadership. May include assisting with mission simulations, training activities, disaster‑recovery exercises, or unexpected operational needs.
Expected Salary Commensurate with Education and Experience.
Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area and two years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience supporting mission‑critical or real‑time operational environments, such as aerospace, defense, aviation, or emergency operations centers.
Advanced knowledge of high‑bandwidth networking, server architectures, and virtualization technologies, including Windows/Linux servers, VMware, and secure communication systems.
Proficiency with workstation hardware and operating systems, including Windows, macOS, and associated peripherals and configuration tools.
Strong cybersecurity, systems integration and troubleshooting skills, including experience coordinating with external technical partners (e.g., federal and commercial space companies).
Competitive candidates must be able to demonstrate polished interpersonal skills and a proven track record of working productively and independently on multiple time/mission critical projects. Should be able to lift up to 40 pounds, crawl under and around desks and other furniture, and have a valid Florida driver’s license.
