Overview Under general supervision, this role provides technical support to the Inpatient Coding Staff, coordinates daily workflow, and supplies coding statistics to the Coding Manager. The coder resolves coding issues, serves as the primary contact for outside departments, and works with the Medical Records Staff to obtain documentation necessary to code all accounts in a timely manner.
Essential Functions
Provides technical coding support to the Inpatient Coding Staff and coordinates daily workflow based on the needs of the department.
Submits daily departmental statistics such as coder productivity and uncoded figures to the Coding Manager.
Works with the Coding Manager and Coding Educator to identify and resolve coding issues.
Reports all aged accounts to the Director of Medical Records and the Coding Manager.
Obtains necessary documentation from Medical Records Staff and/or Physicians to code all accounts in a timely manner.
Provides coding/abstracting support as directed by the Coding Manager.
Analyzes patient medical records, identifies diagnoses and procedures, and assigns proper ICD‑9‑CM and HCPCS codes according to coding manuals and reference material.
Applies Uniform Hospital Discharge Data Set definitions and sequencing guidelines to coded data.
Assesses documentation adequacy, consults physicians for clarification, and answers coding principles/DRG queries.
Stays abreast of developments in medical record technology, attends educational programs, and reviews pertinent literature.
Participates in safety training programs and follows exposure control plans for bloodborne and airborne pathogens.
Promotes effective working relationships within the department to meet goals and objectives.
Provides quality monitoring and contributes to quality improvement initiatives.
Qualifications
Associate’s degree or equivalent in Medical Information Technology (with coursework in medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, disease processes, ICD‑9‑CM coding and prospective payment).
2+ years of coding experience in an acute care setting.
Preferred credentials (any of the following):
CRT-Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA)
CRT-Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT)
CRT-Coding Specialist, Certified‑Physician Based (CCS‑P)
CRT-Coding Specialist (CCS)
