Network Engineer (Levels I-V) Georgia System Operations Corporation

The Network Engineer implements robust solutions supporting GSOC's core networks (Internet, MPLS core, and networks that support the Electrical Membership Cooperatives in the state of Georgia). The engineer is responsible for troubleshooting network routing solutions to meet business requirements.

Job Duties

Engineer I:

Assist with projects involving design and implementation of new data/voice/optical/security networks and modifications that consider alternate routing, load balancing, prioritization, resiliency, and security.

Provision new data, fiber, and optical circuits; perform circuit testing, equipment programming, and documentation.

Provide backup support to operations and maintenance, including resolution of escalated problems at house and remote sites and after‑hours support to the on‑call technician.

Conduct performance measurement tests to identify capacity constraints and assist in future enhancements.

Engineer II:

Implement projects involving design and implementation of new data/voice/optical/security networks with considerations for routing, load balancing, prioritization, resiliency, and security.

Contribute to design studies, equipment evaluations, and recommendations for new networking equipment, services, and technologies.

Provide engineering support for networking & security components (Arista, Cisco, Juniper, Palo Alto firewalls, VPN tunnels, optical equipment, fiber networks).

Engineer III:

Implement projects involving design and implementation of new data/voice/optical/security networks with routing, load balancing, prioritization, resiliency, and security.

Provide design studies, equipment evaluations, and recommendations for new networking equipment, services, and technologies.

Support networking & security components (Arista, Cisco, Juniper, Palo Alto firewalls, VPN tunnels, optical equipment, fiber networks).

Assist senior engineers and conduct training for other department engineers.

Engineer IV:

Manage projects involving design and implementation of new networks, develop proposals, and secure approvals for projects.

Design and architect new telecommunications, data, voice, and fiber networks across all project phases.

Provide design studies, equipment evaluations, and recommendations for new networking equipment, services, and technologies.

Provide training to other department engineers and lead strategic planning of all data, voice, and fiber networks.

Engineer V:

Lead design and architect of new telecommunications, data, voice, and fiber networks, ensuring security with firewalls, VPNs, intrusion detection, and management systems.

Lead strategic planning of all data, voice, optical, and fiber networks and coordinate with stakeholders to ensure design meets requirements.

Provide advanced troubleshooting expertise and identify opportunities for improvement.

Required Qualifications Education:

Bachelor's Degree in Electrical/Electronics Engineering, Telecommunications, Computer Science, and/or Information Technology.

Experience

Engineer I:

0‑2 years' experience in a network engineer role within a large regionalized WAN environment.

Basic routing & switching skills.

Engineer II:

3‑4 years' experience in a network engineer role within a large regionalized WAN environment.

Knowledge of BGP, iBGP, OSPF, eVPN (a plus).

Knowledge of routing strategy design for regionalized WAN access.

Knowledge of Cisco IOS, Juniper Junos, Arista EOS.

Engineer III:

5‑6 years' experience in a network engineer role within a large regionalized WAN environment.

Strong skills in BGP, iBGP, OSPF, eVPN (a plus).

Strong skills in design and implementation of routing strategies for regionalized WAN access.

Strong skills of Cisco IOS, Juniper Junos, Firewall technologies and Arista EOS.

Engineer IV:

6 years' experience in a senior network engineer/architect role within a large regionalized WAN environment.

Expert knowledge in BGP, iBGP, OSPF, eVPN.

Experience in design and implementation of routing strategies for regionalized WAN access.

Experience or good understanding of design and implementation of direct connections into Cloud providers AWS, Azure, SAP, etc.

Strong routing & switching skills.

Experience with Cisco IOS, Juniper Junos, Firewall technologies and Arista EOS.

Engineer V:

10 years' experience in a senior network engineer/architect role within a large regionalized WAN environment.

Expert knowledge in BGP, iBGP, OSPF, eVPN (two or more).

5 years' experience in design and implementation of routing strategies for regionalized WAN access.

Experience with design and implementation of direct connections into Cloud providers AWS, Azure, SAP, etc.

Expert routing & switching skills.

5 years' experience with Cisco IOS, Juniper Junos, Firewall technologies and Arista EOS.

Equivalent Experience

Engineer I: Associates degree in Electrical/Electronics Engineering, Telecommunications, Computer Science, and/or Information Technology with 3 years of networking experience.

Engineer II: Associates degree in Electrical/Electronics Engineering, Telecommunications, Computer Science, and/or Information Technology with 6 years of networking experience.

Engineer III: Associates degree in Electrical/Electronics Engineering, Telecommunications, Computer Science, and/or Information Technology with 9 years of networking experience.

Engineer IV: Associates degree in Electrical/Electronics Engineering, Telecommunications, Computer Science, and/or Information Technology with 12 years of networking experience, including 5 years at an engineering technician or supervisor level.

Engineer V: Associates degree in Electrical/Electronics Engineering, Telecommunications, Computer Science, and/or Information Technology with 15 years of networking experience, including 5 years at an architect level.

Licenses, Certifications and/or Registrations Driver's license. Must obtain and maintain Bulk Electric System Cyber Authorized Status as defined in GSOC's CIP Cyber Security Policy 301 and NERC Reliability Standard CIP 004 - Personnel Risk Assessment.

Specialized Skills Computer, MS Office, Word, Access, PowerPoint, Excel, Visio, effective organizational and verbal/written communication abilities, active listening, critical thinking, and active learning. The ideal candidate will have basic routing skills, be self‑motivated, team oriented, and possess strong interpersonal and presentation skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Engineer I:

Knowledge of OSPF and BGP.

Experience with Cisco IOS, Juniper Junos, Arista EOS.

Experience in design and implementation of routing strategies for regionalized WAN access.

Good written and verbal communication skills.

Active network routing certifications are a plus.

Engineer II:

Knowledge of SD‑WAN solutions.

Experience with B2B VPN and External Access (a plus).

Knowledge of datacenter networking fabric topologies and common architectures deployed, both Layer 2 and Layer 3.

Knowledge of micro‑segmented environments.

Good written and verbal communication skills.

Active network routing certifications are a plus.

Engineer III:

Knowledge of SD‑WAN solutions.

Experience with B2B VPN and External Access (a plus).

Knowledge of datacenter networking fabric topologies and common architectures deployed, both Layer 2 and Layer 3.

Knowledge of micro‑segmented environments.

Knowledge of Python programming.

Good written and verbal communication skills.

Active network routing certifications are a plus.

Engineer IV:

Advanced knowledge in SD‑WAN solutions.

Experience with B2B VPN and External Access (a plus).

Understand datacenter networking fabric topologies and common architectures deployed, both Layer 2 and Layer 3.

Familiarity or experience with architecting and operating micro‑segmented environments.
