The Public Information Unit (PIU) is the subject matter expert in various Labor Commissioner’s Office program areas. It interviews and provides dedicated consultation services to the public on the phone or in‑person (walk‑in assistance or appointments) at a local district office regarding newly filed claims, applications and/or reports of labor law violations.

The PIU prepares and completes referrals and recommendations to the relevant program area to further process the claim, complaint, report or application filed. It also coordinates and leads intake workshops or clinics.

Under the supervision of a Deputy Labor Commissioner III (Senior Deputy) or designee, the incumbent conducts intake consultation assessments with the public for various programs within the Labor Commissioner’s Office. The incumbent’s role is crucial in the initial stages of public engagement during the intake process to ensure a smooth transition for those seeking guidance and assistance on submitting claims, complaints, applications, and/or reports filed by the public.

The incumbent will develop and prepare documented referrals to other units, educate the public on labor laws, and apply theories to assess violations on the liable employers in various claim and report processing.

The Industrial Relations Representative (IRR) classification has been renamed to Labor Compliance Representative (LCR). A new exam was issued on December 15, 2025. Previous IRR exam eligibility is no longer valid. Applicants must take and pass the new LCR exam to be eligible for appointment.

Working Conditions This position is located at 3021 Reynolds Ranch Parkway, Lodi, CA 95240.

The position is in Lodi. It is a high‑volume, fast‑paced office that handles wage claims and consistently interfaces with the public. The incumbent may travel to assist other offices with conducting conferences. Work typically occurs in an office environment and requires the use of a computer, telephone, and other office equipment. The noise level is typical of an office. Incumbent may encounter frequent interruptions throughout the workday.

Special Requirements

The position requires fluency in Spanish. If the State of California does not have a current record documenting your fluency in this language, you will be required to successfully pass an approved language fluency test prior to being hired.
