The College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences (A&S) seeks applicants for a Senior Finance Generalist or Finance Generalist. These positions will be members of the Dean's Office Budget and Finance team and report to the Finance Manager. This position will work closely with members of the budget and finance team, department managers, fiscal administrators, and external stakeholders. The position incumbent must be comfortable in a complex environment and serving the needs of multiple departments, units, and stakeholders.
Senior Finance Generalists perform a hybrid of complex finance work, encompassing a range of specialties, such as accounting, budgeting, payroll, purchasing, and financial analysis. Senior Finance Generalists assume more responsibilities that require deep analysis. They are distinguished by years of experience, depth of institutional knowledge, and sophistication of expertise. Work is conducted independently, and Senior Finance Generalists are responsible for training and mentoring emerging finance professionals.
Senior Finance Generalist Responsibilities
Produce, reconcile, and distribute the financial reports for a wide range of funding sources within the Dean's Office and across A&S.
Examine cash balances periodically, invest funds, or spend appropriately to ensure the optimization of cash management.
Assist with reviewing and cataloging funding commitments.
Monitor chart of account use (FDM) to ensure that departments are maintaining consistency and budget alignment in their use of the FDM.
Either manage independently or assist with, as appropriate, projects that might include Equipment Trust Fund (ETF) process, asset management, stewardship of Dean's Office endowments and gifts, reinvestments, and year-end closing.
Produce financial and/or data analysis as needed as requested by A&S units and departments.
Provide assistance with account certification, expense reports, and purchasing, either directly or as a back‑up.
Troubleshoot various issues that might arise and need quick analysis and turnaround.
Finance Generalist Responsibilities
Manage the Budget and Finance team shared email inbox. This includes monitoring the email traffic on a day‑to‑day basis and escalating issues as appropriate.
Assist with account preparation and certification as needed.
Process payroll accounting adjustments and journal entries.
Oversee and/or assist with the preparation of purchase orders and payment vouchers, ensuring that bills are paid promptly and in compliance with University requirements and resolve any discrepancies with vendors as needed.
Monitor and record details of faculty contracts and other commitments within internal and external systems.
Review various audit and monitoring reports each day to ensure transactions are in compliance with University and A&S policies and procedures; notify the appropriate stakeholders of erroneous, problematic, or time‑sensitive items.
Expected to provide ongoing support and back‑up for Dean's Office Budget and Finance team members as appropriate to ensure continuous support and exceptional customer service.
Attend and participate in University and School meetings (i.e., A&S Departmental Manager and UVA Fiscal Administrators meetings) and must be willing to share information with various stakeholders.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s degree required.
Preferred Qualifications
Finance Generalist: 2 years of experience in a related field strongly preferred.
Senior Finance Generalist: 5 years of experience in a related field strongly preferred.
Problem‑solving skills and the ability to recognize when a problem should be escalated to within the team.
Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook) experience with preference given to applicants with at least intermediate‑level skills in Excel.
Salary Range The anticipated hiring range is $70,000+, commensurate with education and experience.

This position is based in Charlottesville, VA, and requires a hybrid schedule of at least 2 days in the office each week, with additional on‑site presence as needed, in accordance with UVA's remote work guidelines.
