The Gwinnett County Law Department provides legal services to the County including the Board of Commissioners, County Administrator, County Departments, Offices, and Elected Officials. This opening is for one Senior Assistant County Attorney (Attorney II). Senior Assistant County Attorneys counsel the County, assigned departments, and elected officials under federal and state law. The selected attorney will be assigned to the Public Safety Team, providing legal representation to departments such as Police, Sheriff's Office, Fire and Emergency Services, and Corrections.

Essential Duties

Provide legal advice to represented clients, department directors, elected officials, and Boards and Authorities as assigned.

Attend meetings, research, assess legal issues and internal policies, and provide legal opinions.

Advise clients on legal solutions and implement those solutions.

Review, draft, and interpret laws, ordinances, regulations, policies, and resolutions; train on new or amended laws and regulations.

Represent assigned clients in litigation in State and Federal courts at trial and appellate levels (condemnations, tax appeals, nuisance abatement actions, zoning disputes, personal injury suits, employment matters, civil rights, etc.).

Develop case strategy; draft pleadings, motions, briefs; manage discovery; negotiate settlements; handle mediations, hearings and trials; review and draft appellate briefs.

Review, negotiate, and draft contracts and agreements to ensure compliance with internal policies and applicable laws, protecting the County’s interests.

Maintain current knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, case law, policies, and trends; stay informed on professional advances.

Participate in training and continuing education activities; attend and conduct workshops, seminars, and meetings as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Juris Doctorate.

Five years of experience as an attorney.

Member in good standing with the Georgia Bar and admitted to practice in the Superior Courts of Georgia.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in all aspects of State and Federal litigation, especially representing local governments.

Experience reviewing and drafting contracts.

Experience in local government, especially public safety agencies.

Excellent writing and communication skills.

Admitted to practice in the Court of Appeals for the State of Georgia, the Georgia Supreme Court, and the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia.

Salary and Benefits Effective 4/11/2023, the position is eligible for the Employee Referral Program. Salary will be commensurate with experience, ranging between grades 105 and 107.
