Payroll Coordinator
FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Salary according to School Board Pay Plan and 248 Day appointment length.
Position Summary The Payroll Coordinator is responsible for the accurate and timely processing of payroll for all school division employees in accordance with Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) requirements, Virginia Retirement System (VRS) regulations, Virginia state laws, federal regulations, school board policies, and applicable collective bargaining or employment agreements. This position ensures compliance with payroll tax requirements, retirement systems, and benefit deductions while providing excellent customer service to employees and departments.
Required Qualifications
Degree in accounting/finance related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Considerable experience in payroll, preferable in a public sector of educational environment.
Highly knowledgeable in payroll laws, tax regulations, and payroll best practices.
Experience with automated payroll systems.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel.
Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
Ability to meet strict deadlines and manage multiple priorities.
Excellent communication and customer service skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with payroll systems commonly used in Virginia school divisions (e.g., RDA, Munis, or similar).
Knowledge of the Virginia Retirement System (VRS) and related reporting requirements.
Experience working in a Virginia public school division or local government setting.
