About The Role The primary purpose of the Patient Access Representative position is to interview all patients in a professional and courteous manner, completing efficient and timely patient arrivals and registration functions. This includes, but is not limited to, inpatient, outpatient, emergency department, and pre‑registration. The representative electronically enters accurate patient demographic information into the University Hospital computer system and obtains signatures on all required documentation, confirming that required insurance precertification, authorization, and documentation are obtained for billing and medical record processing.
Responsibilities
Obtains and electronically inputs patient demographics and insurance information into the hospital computer system, thoroughly verifying the information presented by the patient.
Ensures efficient, accurate and timely patient registrations and arrivals, interviewing all patients in a professional and courteous manner.
Ensures the correct patients arrive and are checked‑in prior to banding or completing a task.
Obtains identification and current insurance information. Updates the registration system upon obtaining additional information.
Scans documents into the hospital registration system.
Verifies patient’s insurance eligibility to ensure reimbursement for services rendered at the hospital, performing real‑time eligibility, Notice of Admission, and using all available online and manual systems to obtain authorization or pre‑certification.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
High School Diploma or equivalent required.
Three (3) years of clerical experience in a physician’s office, hospital, or insurance company required. (Experience in collections is an advantage).
Knowledge of medical terminology preferred. An understanding of Managed Care, Medicaid, and Charity Care guidelines and regulations preferred. Must be detail oriented and possess excellent customer service skills, as well as oral and written communication skills.
Knowledge of computers and data entry experience required.

Compensation In compliance with New Jersey's Pay Transparency Act, the hourly rate for this position is $25.14 – $26.41. University Hospital considers multiple factors when determining compensation, including (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s relevant work experience, education and training, key skills, internal equity, market data, and organizational needs.
