Under little or no direct supervision, perform a wide variety of street, traffic control and right‑of‑way maintenance functions using hand, power, and motorized equipment in a manner which will ensure safe, economical, effective, and timely results.

Provide exceptional customer service to internal and external customers.

Participate in citywide training designed to strengthen competencies in areas such as communications, leadership, decision‑making and problem‑solving.

Snow and Ice Control

Plow snow utilizing necessary equipment.

Mix, load and apply sand and deicers in appropriate proportions; keep accurate records as directed.

Plow sidewalks and other surfaces.

Respond to snow/ice related work outside of scheduled work hours.

Assist others mounting snow/ice equipment before snow events.

Asphalt Street Repair and Maintenance

Prepare street for bituminous patching or overlaying: sweep, mill, square edges, and tack.

Haul materials for street repairs.

Rake and/or compact asphalt for optimal rideability and longevity; perform routine crack sealing of asphalt.

Protect work sites/direct traffic according to policy and procedures; leave work site neat and clean (sweep, pick up asphalt chunks, remove signage).

Traffic Signs and Signals

Make arrangements for utility locations.

Determine proper location and install posts and signs in conformance with municipal, state and federal regulations.

Assemble new street signs; replace missing signs; repair damaged signs.

Replace traffic signal bulbs.

Maintain signs and parts inventory and inform supervisor of what is needed.

Record changes and/or new installations on sign inventory maps.

Inspect traffic signals as assigned.

Street Cleaning

Operate city street sweepers; dispose of sweeping debris.

Assist sweepers by hand sweeping or by shoveling areas that the sweepers cannot reach.

Keep accurate records of the sweeping program.

Equipment Use and Operations

Perform CDL inspections/pre‑operation checks; perform all pre‑operational checks and maintenance according to the manufacturer recommendations on all non‑CDL vehicles.

Report all equipment damage and accident to supervisor immediately; report all equipment maintenance needs using "Vehicle Repair Order/CDL Book" to equipment supervisor or immediate supervisor.

Make minor equipment repairs and adjustments as capable or as assigned.

Other Work (Including, but not limited to)

Roadside mowing; gravel road and shoulder maintenance; right‑of‑way cleaning and maintenance (trash, pickup, sod repair); traffic markings; tree trimming and removal.

Dig cemetery graves.

Fabrication and building using welder, torches, carpenter tools, etc.

Bucket truck operation.

Assist other departments as needed.

Keep supervisor properly informed of all significant matters he/she must know to perform his/her position responsibilities effectively.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED.

Valid Minnesota driver's license with good driving record.

Must obtain a valid Class A Minnesota commercial learner permit (CLP) within three (3) months of hire.

Must obtain a valid Class A Minnesota commercial driver's license (CDL) within one (1) year of hire.

Must be able to operate and maintain a variety of street maintenance equipment such as sweepers, pavers, skid steers, and loaders.

Desired Qualifications

One year of municipal street maintenance experience or one year of highway or street reconstruction experience.

Experience in snow and ice removal with a variety of equipment.

Valid Class A or Class B Minnesota commercial driver's license.

Physical Requirements

Very frequent: standing, sitting, walking, lifting, pushing/pulling, carrying, climbing, bending at waist, reaching (extending hands and arms in any direction), handling objects (grasping, turning or otherwise using hands or hand).

Frequent: kneeling (bending leg at knee and resting on knee), crouching (bending at knees), repetitive hand motion, use of arm muscles over extended periods, use of leg muscles over extended periods, overhead work (over shoulder height).

Occasional: crawling (moving about on hands and knees), stationary desk or bench work with neck bent forward.

Weights Lifted/Carried

Must be able to lift/carry items weighing from 0 – 100 pounds from 0 to 6 feet; the employee must be able to handle shoveling asphalt, plow equipment, signs and posts, and various street maintenance equipment.

Job Requirements

Working outdoors in various weather conditions; working indoors; operating forklifts, machinery, or vehicles; working with chemicals; working near fumes/vapors and driving a city or personal vehicle to perform work functions.
