Inventory Specialist Responsibilities

Execute, monitor, and train inventory best practices and standard operating procedures for the entire store, including front end and pharmacy; support pharmacy inventory management activities such as receiving, counting, ordering, and facilitating returns.

Champion On-Shelf Availability and perform receiving, counting, pricing, returns, and all in‑store inventory processes; validate and ensure accuracy of planograms.

Review and coordinate the proper use of reports and system applications that impact the accuracy of front end and pharmacy on‑hand balances and pricing.

Execute and maintain front end and pharmacy asset protection techniques, and file claims for warehouse and vendor overages, shortages, order errors, or damaged goods—including prescription drugs.

In designated stores, open and close the store in the absence of management, performing required system start‑ups, cash handling, cashier responsibilities, and ensuring the floor and stock room are ready for the business day.

Customer Experience

Engage customers by greeting them and offering assistance with products and services; when serving as the leader on duty, resolve customer issues and answer questions to ensure a positive experience.

Model and share customer service best practices with all team members, including interpersonal habits (greeting, eye contact, courtesy) and Walgreens service traits (proactive help, needs identification, servicing until satisfied).

Operations

Execute and coach team members on warehouse and vendor inventory management processes, including creating, reviewing, and receiving orders.

Scan all deliveries while the vendor is in the store, focusing on One Box receiving; mark delivery as received if product was physically delivered, contact vendor for past undelivered receipts, and open tickets as needed to correct inaccurate orders.

Verify all pharmacy shipments are posted for products physically received at the store; complete or verify postings of pharmacy warehouse orders, ABC prescription and OTC orders, secondary vendor orders, flu and dropship orders, and report shortages or damaged product.

Complete On‑Shelf Availability (OSA) end‑to‑end process for planogrammed departments, executing disposals, call‑ins, and vendor returns before expiration, and complete scan‑outs/returns on all subscribed departments, including vendor/DSD and pharmacy scan‑outs.

Under pharmacist supervision, complete pharmacy inventory activities such as recalls following the Pharmacy Hazardous Waste Policy, vendor returns, non‑controlled and damaged salvage returns, excess inventory returns or interstore transfers for non‑returnable ABC overstock, and verify posting of pharmacy prescription claims.

Execute all pricing activities, including price changes, markdowns, and markdown deletes; responsible for basic department pricing, daily price changes, accurate signage, and regulatory pricing tasks.

Support front end and pharmacy ordering by ordering expense items, monitoring pharmacy manual orders to identify excess orders, and maintaining consigned inventory as required.

Ensure all designated pull & quarantine items on‑hands are updated and placed in the designated holding area.

Maintain accurate inventory counts for basic departments, stockroom, overstock locations, and pharmacy; complete pharmacy smart counts.

Ensure store maintains inventory compliance with state and local laws regarding regulated products (e.g., alcoholic beverages, tobacco).

Assist in maintaining inventory records: receiving and posting all products to inventory systems, organizing files, and retaining all invoices, receipts, and return authorizations.

Help prepare for physical inventory and support physical inventory day activities, including preparing sales floor, stockroom, and pharmacy, and auditing the third‑party team on inventory day.

Support keeping all counters and shelves clean and well merchandised.

Be knowledgeable of all store systems and equipment.

Assist and coach store team on package delivery activities, including scanning in and out of packages, completing daily inventory functions, and package returns at Walgreens; support execution of Pickup Program.

In designated stores, when serving as the leader on duty, register all related sales on the POS, manage scanning errors, price verifications, items not on file, price modifications, voids, product returns, order voids, customer refunds, cash drops to safe, and provide change as requested.

Comply with all company policies and procedures; maintain respectful relationships with coworkers.

Complete any additional activities and tasks as assigned.

Training & Personal Development

Attend company‑based trainings for continuous development and complete all e‑learning modules, including safety training requirements.

Obtain and maintain a valid pharmacy license/certification as required by the state.

Communications

Serve as a liaison between management and non‑management team members by coaching and developing other capabilities with inventory systems; when serving as the leader on duty, communicate assigned tasks and report disciplinary issues and customer complaints to management.

Basic Qualifications

Six months of prior work experience with Walgreens (internal candidates) or one year of prior retail work experience (external candidates).

Fluency in reading, writing, and speaking English (except in Puerto Rico).

Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including evening and weekend hours.

“Achieving expectations” rating on last performance review and no written disciplinary actions in the previous 12 months (internal candidates only).

Demonstrated attention to detail and ability to multi‑task and manage execution.

Experience in identifying operational issues and recommending and implementing strategies to resolve problems.

Preferred Qualifications

Previous experience as a shift lead, pharmacy technician, designated hitter, or customer service associate.

Prior work experience with Walgreens, with an evaluation on file.
