Position Summary We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Manager – Research Laboratory Operations. The role provides operational management for all laboratories administered by Perlmutter Cancer Center, including those in the Smilow Research Center, Medical Science Building, Cure building, and other assigned sites. Operational management includes oversight of scientific instrumentation, facilities management (building operations, cleaning and recycling, climate control, compliance, and laboratory safety). The Manager will assist with emergency response, partner with PCC Grants and Finance Administration to assess lab staffing needs, funding resources, and personnel changes, and serve as the primary operational contact for onboarding and off‑boarding laboratory PIs and their lab members.
Job Responsibilities
Manages day-to-day operations of all research laboratories administered by Perlmutter Cancer Center, including implementation and maintenance of Benchling e‑lab notebooks, maintaining the laboratory membership tool in real-time and managing controlled substance tracking for all labs.
Supervises administrative coordinators or other support positions tasked with day-to-day lab operations including supply orders, management of gases and dry ice.
Partners with PCC leadership to identify available space for laboratory investigators and their teams; maintains an updated log of PCC research space utilization.
Coordinates onboarding needs of laboratory researchers pertaining to lab space assignment, moving logistics, equipment procurement, establishment of maintenance contracts, obtaining access to necessary applications for lab compliance, and other duties as assigned.
Supervises laboratory research relocations and assists staff with space move resolutions.
Coordinates off‑boarding of laboratory researchers including decommissioning of any lab resources, transfer of samples, and compliance with all NYULH and OSR off‑boarding requirements.
In partnership with PCC research administration and finance, develop and manage annual operating budgets for each laboratory that encompass personnel and OTPS expenses; review performance and work with PIs to adjust personnel and OTPS to align with budgeted expenses.
Oversees purchasing service contracts and maintenance of all equipment; ensures PCC finance team is aware of new purchases and associated service/maintenance contracts.
Trains and instructs research staff on operation of relevant laboratory equipment as needed.
Coordinates with RED+F, OSR and Research Emergency Resilience to ensure PCC compliance with institutional readiness and associated policies.
Oversees laboratory renovations as needed; coordinates operations to ensure efficient, cost‑conscious changes to labs.
Coordinates re‑organization of lab space for optimization and implements strategies for best use of shared spaces.
Responsible for coordinating Material Transfer Agreements from contract approval to shipment and receiving of research materials.
Assists PIs or lab managers with IBC and BSL2 approvals and inspections.
Assists PIs in purchase, delivery and installation of capital equipment and oversees necessary laboratory renovations.
Minimum Qualifications To qualify you must have a Bachelor of Science in Biology, Chemistry, or relevant science, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 3 to 5 years of laboratory and/or laboratory operations experience. Familiarity with the capabilities, requirements, uses, and physical conditions for active research laboratories. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, ability to interact productively with leadership, faculty and staff to identify and resolve problems. Prior experience in building/facility support and management preferred. Excellent project management skills and extensive knowledge of facilities management, complex operating systems, equipment maintenance, and associated techniques and processes. Strong communication, relationship, and team‑building skills. Excellent judgement and reasoning ability enabling problem-solving and issue resolution across varying situations. Ability to work independently, take initiative and make decisions with in‑depth understanding. Responsible for setting and meeting department deadlines in alignment with research operations strategic and operational plans.
Preferred Qualifications Masters degree in life science or health‑related field.
Qualified candidates must effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.

The salary range for the role is $97,589.96 – $150,000.00 annually. Actual salaries depend on experience, specialty, education, and hospital need.
