Position Summary This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.
The role serves as a first‑level business counselor/advisor, providing business advice and counsel to pre‑venture business clients as part of a statewide team focused on assisting entrepreneurs to evaluate their ideas and transition to 'in business' companies. The individual independently obtains and manages a client portfolio that ensures 50–75 business starts annually, with an emphasis on short‑term (30–45 day) starts. The individual collaborates and consults with other SBTDC team members and partners to ensure client success, ensuring a successful transition of a started business to another SBTDC counselor or professional partner as appropriate. The individual acts as the principal trainer and marketer for cohort‑based startup curriculum throughout the assigned region, developing and maintaining relationships with entrepreneurial activities in the assigned region to identify prospective clients. Travel, evenings, and weekends are required.
Key Responsibilities
Provide business advice and counsel to pre‑venture business clients as part of a statewide team.
Obtain and manage a client portfolio aiming for 50–75 business starts annually (30–45 day starts focus).
Collaborate with SBTDC team members and partners to ensure client success and seamless transition to appropriate counselors or partners.
Act as principal trainer and marketer for cohort‑based startup curriculum in the region.
Develop and maintain relationships with regional entrepreneurial activities (universities, incubators, accelerators, collaborative spaces, pitch competitions).
Travel as required and work evenings and weekends to support clients.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree and one year of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of training and experience; all degrees from accredited institutions.
Broad general knowledge of the principals and practices of small business.
Strong computer skills (word processing, spreadsheet development, database management).
Demonstrated ability to develop and analyze financial statements (income statement, balance sheet, cash flow).
Working knowledge of techniques for collecting and interpreting market and demographic data.
Ability to work independently, handle multiple assignments, and establish work priorities.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Must have ability to travel and work nights and weekends.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in entrepreneurship ecosystem and/or startup environment.
