Oncology Data Specialist I – Cancer Registry

Overview This specialty position combines data science, information science, and quality assurance to interpret complex medical information in electronic medical records. The role supports critical program activities—including direct patient care, regulatory, and accreditation requirements—by abstracting clinical data into Geisinger's cancer registry.
Duties
Identify malignant, reportable‑by‑agreement benign, or borderline disease cases in accordance with the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (COC) FORDS Manual, Pennsylvania Cancer Registry Manual, and Geisinger Cancer Committee standards.
Review and interpret clinical information from electronic and hard‑copy records to extract and maintain data per operational standards and state/national reporting requirements.
Abstract primary and recurrence/metastasis data, including demographics, diagnosis, history of cancer, comorbidities, stage and extent of disease, diagnostic procedures, treatments, and provider information.
Input data directly into the computerized cancer registry and complete case‑finding, including review of pathology reports, disease index, and suspense list.
Code stage of disease using the TNM Classification of Malignant Tumors (TNM) staging system per the American Joint Commission on Cancer guidelines.
Maintain accession files for all patients entered into the registry.
Perform annual follow‑up for all living patients to determine current disease status, which involves medical record review, communication with physicians, other medical facilities, or patients.
Submit weekly Pennsylvania Cancer Registry (PCR) files and quarterly correction files to the state for all facilities.
Craft policies, procedures, standards, and guidelines for the Health Information Management department.
Generate and present data reports, including graphic, statistical, and data‑table reports for the Cancer Center Annual Report and survey.
Collaborate with Cancer Center Committee members to ensure accreditation standards are met and participate in the ACoS survey.
Prepare and distribute Cancer Registry Subcommittee meeting minutes.
Assist with annual Survey Application Record updates as assigned.
Submit data to the Pennsylvania Cancer Registry and National Cancer Database via appropriate media to maintain regulatory compliance and accreditation.
Develop and mentor Oncology Data Analysts.
Perform additional duties as assigned by Health Information Management (HIM) leadership.
Position Details
Education: High School Diploma or GED (Required); Associate’s Degree preferred.
Experience: Minimum 3 years in a tumor registry (Required). Minimum overall relevant experience: 4 years (Required).
Certification: Cancer Registry Management Certificate from an NCRA accredited program or ODS credential maintained for the past 5 years, actively working in a hospital cancer registry (Required).
Work environment: Office setting; preferred work from home on Eastern Standard Time (EST) or Central Standard Time (CST).
Compensation: Competitive salary with $5,000 sign‑on bonus; benefits begin day one.
