Phlebotomist
Job Summary
The general duty of the Phlebotomist is to provide phlebotomy services as well as administrative/clerical support for the Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC).
Essential Functions
Perform full range of phlebotomist duties including venipuncture, finger‑stick, heel‑stick, and special test‑related procedures. Ensure proper patient accessioning, specimen collection, processing, and distribution.
Conduct patient in‑processing prior to specimen collection, including review of paperwork and providing guidance and assistance.
Assemble equipment—tourniquet, needles, disposable containers, gauze, cotton, alcohol—according to test requirements.
Verify or record identity of patient or donor, converse to allay fear, conduct interviews, take vital signs, and draw and test blood samples to screen donors at blood bank.
Provide technical oversight and training for invasive procedures, ensuring safety, cleanliness, and minimal patient discomfort.
Perform phlebotomy‑related administrative and clerical procedures at the Front Desk, fully document samples per SOP, maintain supply inventory and cleanliness.
Provide non‑phlebotomy administrative support as needed (front desk, exam rooms, Telehealth).
Provide instruction on patient‑centered specimen collection (24‑hour urine, occult blood testing, semen analysis) and special requirements for laboratory‑collected specimens.
Demonstrate knowledge of all aspects of phlebotomy, using age‑specific techniques for infants and elderly.
Understand patient reaction types; counsel patients on post‑phlebotomy care.
Provide general clerical/administrative support and coordinate work for the unit.
Perform other work‑related duties as required.
Required Skills and Experience
Prefer two years of current clinical experience as a phlebotomist within the last three years.
Knowledge of medical terminology for understanding and communicating test requests and results.
Knowledge of patient reaction types and procedures for such incidents.
Exceptional diplomatic communication skills and experience in handling difficult customer situations.
Detail‑oriented and able to multi‑task.
Required Education
Certificate of completion of Phlebotomy course.
Current CPR/BLS certification from American Heart Association (AHA) or Military Training Network (MTN).
Working Conditions / Physical Requirements
Moderate physical activity; handles objects up to 25 pounds; standing or walking for more than four hours per day.
Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office environment.
Required to respond to medical emergency within the clinic.
