Job Description PRN 1P-9:30P as needed Under general supervision, the Sterile Processing Tech II prepares, sterilizes, stores and issues medical/surgical instruments, supplies and equipment in accordance with departmental and hospital policies and procedures. Performs and/or assists in decontamination and distribution of medical/surgical supplies, instruments and equipment. Must demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age, culture, ethnicity, and specific individual diagnostic needs of the patients served in the department. Capable of assessing and interpreting patient data to identify specific needs and provide appropriate care. Consistently expresses compassion and courtesy for patients and extends support to patient families/visitors.
Principal Responsibilities and Tasks
Work effectively with surgical and anesthesia teams to assure surgical instrumentation and equipment availability for scheduled surgical procedures while using customer service skills.
Maintain fire safety in the OR by accurately assessing and monitoring the environment for hazards and following all regulatory requirements.
Care of implants: Maintain safe practices involving the sterilization and cleaning of implants.
Provide excellent customer service, teamwork, and collaboration with all team members.
Recognize and act on potential equipment or instrumentation problems and demonstrate diligent adherence to cleaning and sterilization processes.
Perform decontamination activities, preparing instrumentation for sterilization in accordance with established practices.
Load and unload steam sterilizers and related equipment, recognizing malfunctions and reporting them immediately.
Dispense instruments/equipment to the surgical team and assist with any other duties as assigned.
Demonstrate safety of the clinical environment, compliance with TJC National Patient Safety Goals, and knowledge of cost‑effective practices.
Maintain competency by attending required in‑services, staff meetings, and completing written training exercises.
Qualifications
Completion of high school level coursework with a high school diploma or GED.
A minimum of one year Central Sterile Processing experience or successful completion of a recognized OR Central Sterile program.
Basic computer skills with ability to learn within one year.
Ability to read, write, speak English and perform simple mathematical operations for inventory purposes.
Ability to operate potentially hazardous sterilizing equipment and related equipment.
Capable of standing, walking, loading carts, and handling equipment up to 50 pounds.
Strong verbal and written communication skills, including ability to label supplies for inventory.
Demonstrate universal precautions and safe operation of steam and Sterrad sterilizers.
