Education: Graduate of a school of practical or vocational nursing approved by the appropriate State agency and/or accredited by the National League for Nursing (Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) at the time the program was completed by the applicant). Exceptions include health care education in the military service or training in the military service which is accepted by the licensing body in the jurisdiction in which the individual is licensed as qualifying for full LPN/LVN licensure will be accepted as meeting the education requirements for VHA employment. VHA employees who were converted to appointments under 38 U.S.C. 7401(3) in implementation of Public Law 98-160 - enacted November 21 - 1983. VHA employees converted to appointments under 38 U.S.C. 7405 in implementation of Public Law 99-576 - enacted October 28 - 1986 and for their future personnel actions under this authority. The waiver will not apply to persons appointed under 38 U.S.C. 7401(3) or 7405 after these conversions. Individuals granted a license by a jurisdiction that does not require graduation from an approved school. Licensure: Full, active, current and unrestricted licensure as a licensed practical or vocational nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States - or District of Columbia. An LPN/LVN who has ever had any license(s) revoked, suspended, denied, restricted, limited, or was placed in a probationary status may be appointed only in accordance with the provisions in chapter 3 - section B - paragraph 16 of this part. Physical Standards: See VA Directive and Handbook 5019. English Language Proficiency: Licensed practical or vocational nurses appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in both spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d). Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements, the following qualification criteria must be met for each grade: Your qualifications must clearly demonstrate the level of competence required for the grade. For the GS-03 level: None beyond the basic requirements. LPNs at this grade level are expected to perform all duties within the scope of their license (e.g., medication administration). However, completed work may require routine or detailed higher level review depending upon the complexity of the duties involved. For the GS-04 level: (a) Six months of qualifying experience as an LPN or LVN. (b) Graduation from an approved school (waived as provided in paragraph 4 of Section C) and one year of experience that involved nursing care work in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, or other supervised medical, nursing, or patient care facility with practical knowledge of human body structure and sterile techniques and procedures. (c) Graduation from an approved school of at least 24 months duration. (d) LPNs at the GS-4 grade level perform all duties expected of employees at the GS-3 grade level but are expected to exercise greater judgment, require less supervision, and operate in accordance with all established policies, procedures, and techniques. For the GS-05 level: Completion of at least one year of qualifying experience at the GS-4 level or equivalent. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy ranges from GS-03 to GS-06. Physical Requirements: Ability to stand, walk, bend, and move freely. Must use good body mechanics for lifting or restraining patients. Must have good hearing, eyesight, and physical dexterity. Must be clean and neat in appearance. Must be emotionally stable and cooperative. Work is accomplished predominantly on the nursing unit and through escorting to various clinics or hospital areas. The physical surroundings involve working with the acutely and chronically physically and mentally ill patients, which may cause discomfort related to negative verbal and physical activities from these patients. Duties

Deliver fundamental, knowledge-based care to assigned clients while developing technical competencies. Provide quality nursing care to Veterans. Work as a vital team member in collaboration with the inpatient Mental Health Team and ancillary departments to provide excellent quality patient care. Lead groups in the care area to support the recovery and rehabilitation of the Veteran population. Engage Veterans in activities while promoting professional boundaries and appropriate behavior. Monitor the Veteran population as ordered by the provider, including one-on-one observation when needed. Collect specimens as ordered by the provider and inform patients of specimen collection procedures. Communicate and interact appropriately and courteously with internal and external customers. Work and function within a safe manner, including infection control and use of equipment, ensuring patient safety is paramount in all aspects of patient care. Work Schedule: Rotating shifts that vary from 7:30 a.m to 4:00 p.m. – 7:30 a.m – 8:00 p.m. – 3:30 m, – 12:00 a.m. – 3:30 m. – 4:00 a.m. – 11:30 p.m. – 8:00 a.m. – 11:30 p.m. – 12:00 p.m. – with rotating weekends and holidays. Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave – 13 days of sick leave – 11 paid Federal holidays per year). Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full-time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66.
