Yellowstone Pathology Institute, Inc. (YPI) is seeking a full-time histotechnologist or histotechnician to join our fast-paced, independent reference laboratory in Billings, Montana. Immediate opening available.
YPI serves hospitals and clinics across Montana, Northern Wyoming, and eastern Idaho, with a team of nine pathologists specializing in dermatopathology, GI/liver pathology, cytopathology, hematopathology, and molecular pathology. Casework is diverse and complex.

Job Summary Responsible for preparing tissue samples for histologic examination, including embedding, processing, sectioning, staining (routine, frozen, and special stains), and equipment maintenance. Performs gross examination of surgical pathology specimens under direct supervision of a board‑certified pathologist. Duties may include tissue procurement for research or specialized studies. Must be able to select appropriate tissue samples based on clinical history and handle diverse specimen types.
Knowledge & Experience
5+ years in histology preferred, hospital lab experience a plus
Proficient in microtomy, tissue cutting, and staining techniques
Familiar with anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, and computer operations
Basic knowledge of macrosurgical techniques and general lab skills
Understanding of safety and infection control standards
Ability to prepare tissue for pathology evaluation and assist pathologists efficiently
Education College coursework in anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, or completion of a histotechnician program required. Must understand disease processes, gross and microscopic anatomy, medical terminology, procedural skills, and relevant laboratory tests in surgical pathology.
License/Certification Histotechnician or Histotechnologist certification preferred. Bachelor’s or master’s degree from an accredited program also preferred.
Aptitudes
Strong attention to microscopic detail and manual dexterity for fine tissue cutting
Flexible schedule (early mornings, rotating Saturdays/holidays) and rare travel to our lab in Cody, WY
Ability to perform special stains accurately and efficiently
Organized, able to manage high-volume workload with precisionCollaborative and adaptable within all lab areas
Skilled in specimen processing, inking, cutting, and preparation per protocols
Assists with surgical specimen dissection, accessioning, and gathering clinical data
Demonstrates time management and professionalism; performs duties as assigned
