Summary The YMCA Youth & Government Youth Legislature educates and engages teens in grades 8‑12 in the state legislative process through hands‑on experience, mentorship, and debate. The program culminates in a four‑day session in Olympia each spring, where delegates draft bills, debate, publish a newspaper, and elect officers.
Responsibilities
Mentor and guide 8‑12‑graders on parliamentary procedure, debate skills, persuasive writing, and bill drafting.
Attend mandatory State YAG Advisor trainings and meetings throughout the year.
Attend all or majority of delegation meetings at the association office or confirmed location (8‑month program from October‑May, excluding holiday breaks).
Communicate via email with Lead Advisor and State Youth & Government offices; respond to notifications promptly.
Adhere to YMCA policies, rules, and objectives; uphold mission during all meetings.
Maintain a 1:10 advisor‑to‑delegate ratio at all youth & government activities.
Be available for the 79th Youth Legislative Session (April 29‑May 2, 2026).
Qualifications
Minimum 21 years of age (exceptions for 18‑20 with relevant experience).
Experience or interest in civic engagement, leadership mentoring for teens.
Experience or interest in local, state, and national politics.
Experience or interest in social justice.
Must pass a background check to work with youth and teens.
