Job Description The Sonographer III is responsible for the independent operation of sonographic equipment, performing and communicating results of diagnostic examinations using sonography, and managing daily operations of the sonographic laboratory, patient schedule, equipment maintenance, reporting equipment failures, and quality assessment. This position maintains a high standard of medical ethics at all times and is self‑motivated to increase understanding and knowledge of the field, disease, and new procedures as they evolve.
Responsibilities
Perform various examinations (abdominal, renal, aorta, thyroid, pelvic, obstetrical, biophysical profiles, vascular studies, testicular and breast scans, 2‑D and/or 3‑D echocardiograms, transesophageal echocardiograms (TEE), stress echo, carotid, arterial, venous, aorta depending on department, color flow studies, doppler studies, biopsies, and fluid collections of localized areas).
Perform ordered exams/request on patients per physician order, appropriate indication, patient history, and other pertinent information.
Review patient charts and requests with the radiologist as needed.
Takes representative anatomical images, checks all images to assure that the required images have been acquired per protocols, recognizes normal vs abnormal anatomy, exhibits knowledge of various pathological processes, and completes the sonographer report.
Analyze ultrasound images and medical history, and communicate findings to the appropriate physician/provider; provide written unofficial reports.
Quality‑control all images; consult with radiologist about scan reading and reports.
Maintain documentation of daily procedures in the ultrasound daily log book.
Be available for on‑call status rotations.
Maintain knowledge, licensure, and certification.
Mark images for proper definition and explanation.
Use high‑level disinfectant per manufacturer guidelines.
Report any malfunctions and call service personnel.
Perform general clerical duties.
Maintain ultrasound rooms for optimum efficiency (stocking linen, gel, gloves, supplies).
Assist in other duties as assigned.
May be required to remain on campus before, during, and after severe weather or disasters.
Qualifications Minimum Education
Technical Diploma/Certificate in Diagnostic Medical Sonography or a related field (Required).
Minimum Work Experience
1–3 years experience in echo or vascular ultrasound (Preferred).
Licenses & Certifications
BLS for Healthcare Providers (BLS) – American Heart Association (Upon Hire Required).
Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) or Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS_CCI) (Upon Hire Required).
Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) or Registered Vascular Specialist (RVS_CCI) (Upon Hire Required).
Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
Demonstrates knowledge and ability to perform tasks listed on the competencies list.
Must be able to multi‑task daily.
Knowledge of filing systems, telephone etiquette, and customer service.
Computer skills.
