Staff Psychologist (Primary Care-Mental Health Integration) Apply for the Staff Psychologist (Primary Care-Mental Health Integration) role at U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP).

Responsibilities

Total Rewards of a Allied Health Professional The VA Northeast Ohio Healthcare System – Psychology Service – is actively recruiting for enthusiastic and qualified psychologist candidates for an immediate opportunity to join our PC-MHI team.

Program development and research opportunities are widely available.

The Staff Psychologist duties include: providing a wide range of brief clinical services to veterans in primary care.

Individual and group treatments – health psychology interventions – consultation – and functional and risk assessments.

Interventions for subclinical symptoms such as dysphoria, anxiety, adjustment to disability, and changes in social roles due to physical health changes and challenges.

Provides consultation and education to patients, families, and significant others – as well as PACT teams and clinical staff within the Northeast Ohio Healthcare system – and serves as an integral member of the PACT team at the Parma VA.

Remains available for timely and same-day access for veterans in primary care.

Evaluation of cognitive deficits to address specific functional questions.

Complies with national and local performance measures – including timely health care screening and completion of clinical reminders for all patients.

Supports medical staff in decision-making – patient care process issues – and improving staff-patient working relationships.

Provides training, lectures, or workshops to trainees, mental health staff, medical staff, and others in the community when requested to do so.

Work schedule: Monday – Friday – 8:00 am–6:30 pm (4x10s – Flexibility in the tour).

Compressed/Flexible: Compressed or alternate work schedules will be considered for highly qualified applicants.

When setting pay – a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of higher or unique qualifications or special needs of the VA (above minimum rate of the grade).

Paid time off: 37–50 days of annual paid time off per year – 13–26 days of annual leave – 13 days of sick leave – 11 paid federal holidays per year.

Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual based on prior work experience or military service experience.

Parental leave: After 12 months of employment – up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.

Childcare subsidy: After 60 days of employment – full-time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66.

Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401(k) with up to 5% in contributions by VA Insurance.

Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement).

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

United States citizenship required; non-citizens may be appointed only if no qualified citizens can be recruited in accordance with VA policy.

English language proficiency required – written and spoken English proficiency as per VA Handbook 5005.

Education requirement – doctoral degree in psychology from an APA- or PCSAS- or CPA-accredited graduate program, or a doctoral degree in any area of psychology with a specialty area consistent with the assignment, or a doctoral degree from 1951–1978 from a regionally-accredited institution with a primarily psychological dissertation, or a qualifying respecialization program.

Internship requirement – successful completion of an APA- or CPA-accredited professional psychology internship or an acceptable VHA internship, or board certification by the American Board of Professional Psychology with a specialty area consistent with the assignment.

Licensure – full, current, and unrestricted license to practice psychology at the doctoral level in a U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia.

Exception: Non-licensed applicants who otherwise meet eligibility may be given a temporary appointment as a graduate psychologist at GS-11 or GS-12 under 38 U.S.C. 7405(c)(2)(B) for up to two years, provided care is under supervision of a licensed psychologist.

Failure to obtain licensure during that period is grounds for termination of the temporary appointment.

May qualify under the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who qualify).

Grade determinations – GS‑11: no additional experience beyond basic requirement. GS‑12: at least one full year of experience as a professional psychologist equivalent to GS‑11 level, with demonstrated knowledge, skills, and abilities including treatment implementation, research activities, consultation, and clinical literature knowledge.

GS‑13: at least two additional years of experience, with at least one year equivalent to GS‑12 level, and experience in professional practice and/or supervised post-doctoral training demonstrating paid or unpaid employment and/or license.

Preferred experience – formal training in primary care mental health integration or specialty medicine clinics, experience with complex mental health and medical conditions, training in brief and time-limited psychotherapy and motivational interviewing, interdisciplinary team experience, and program development and outcomes evaluation experience.

Physical requirements – recurring travel to veterans’ homes, primarily sedentary face-to-face and virtual mental health care, operation of a government-owned or leased motor vehicle, valid state-issued driver’s license, and medical clearance by Employee Occupational Health.

Base Pay Range $88,776.00/yr – $164,491.00/yr.
