Pay Range U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs provided pay range: Base pay: $88,621.00 per year – $115,213.00 per year.

Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) — a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. The award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Qualifications

United States Citizenship: Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

English Language Proficiency; MFTs must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005 – Part II – Chapter 3 – Section A – paragraph 3j.

Education: Master’s or doctoral degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling, Clinical Mental Health Counseling and Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling, or a related field from a program accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP).

Examples of related mental health counseling fields include (but are not limited to) Addiction Counseling, Community Counseling, Gerontology Counseling, Marital – Couple – and Family Counseling.

Licensure: Must hold a full, current, and unrestricted license to independently practice as a Licensed Professional Mental Health Counselor (LPMHC), including diagnosis and treatment.

Experience: At least one year of progressively complex LPMHC experience equivalent to the GS‑11 grade level; five years of post‑licensed experience demonstrating advanced practice skills and judgment for senior LPMHCs.

Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Advanced knowledge and mastery of theories and modalities used in the specialized treatment of complex mental illness; ability to incorporate complex multiple causes in differential diagnosis and treatment; ability to provide specialized treatment, coordinated psychosocial services, system change based on data, subject matter consultation, teaching & mentorship, and effective communication of policies and practices.

NOTE: Readjustment Counselors can be filled by Social Worker, Psychologist, LPMHC, and Marriage & Family Therapist. Each discipline is announced separately; applicants must apply to the announcement for which they are qualified.

Duties

Provide direct counseling services, outreach, referral, and follow‑up care coordination to eligible individuals, couples, and family members.

Coordinate client care and staff professional development; provide expert clinical consultation to clinicians on complex psychosocial conditions.

Implement readjustment counseling independently to individuals, couples, families, and groups.

Conduct risk assessment and crisis intervention, including safety planning and complex treatment planning.

Coordinate care with inter‑professional team members and leadership, modeling ethical and professional behaviors.

Serve on committees, workgroups, and task forces at the facility, medical center, zone, district, national, or community level as directed.

Act as clinical consultant to Vet Center outreach workers, improving sensitivity to clinical indicators and interview questions.

Coordinate with Vet Center Outreach Specialists to ensure seamless referral of community‑engaged individuals.

Participate in administrative and clinical staff meetings, and document clinical interactions per policy.

Screen and assess individuals to establish therapeutic relationship suitable for intake procedures, including risk assessment.

Plan counseling goals and update individualized readjustment counseling service plans with outcome measurements.

Provide clinical supervision, consultation, and training to staff and trainees under the supervision of the Vet Center Director, including chart auditing as outlined by policy.

Promote team cohesion and staff development through participation in staff meetings.

Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of practice.

Work Schedule Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm; some nights and weekends required. Telework not available; virtual position not applicable.
