Responsibilities

Injury Prevention, Care, and Rehabilitation

Provide athletic training services including injury/illness prevention, emergency care, clinical evaluation, therapeutic intervention, and rehabilitation for student-athletes.

Conduct on-site recognition, evaluation, and immediate care of acute or catastrophic injuries and illnesses.

Develop and implement individualized rehabilitation and reconditioning programs based on clinical findings and physician recommendations.

Determine an athlete's readiness to return to play and communicate this with stakeholders.

Advise athletes and staff on strength training, conditioning, proper exercise techniques, nutrition, and safe practice habits.

Event and Practice Coverage

Provide coverage at all home athletic contests, all away football games, designated playoff events, and non-game day practices as scheduled.

Serve as the primary medical point of contact during athletic events until EMS or further medical support arrives.

Provide game day supplies, including water, ice, and medical kits.

Collaboration and Communication

Act as a liaison between physicians, coaches, athletes, parents/guardians, and school staff regarding athlete care, including concussion protocols and injury status.

Inform families of injuries and provide treatment recommendations.

Maintain ongoing communication with the Athletic Director regarding athlete status and program needs.

Documentation and Compliance

Maintain accurate and timely injury records and treatment logs.

Ensure compliance with all applicable regulations including MIAA, HIPAA, and district policies.

Enter and manage medical documentation, including pre-participation physicals and concussion test results.

Provide coaches and administration with up-to-date eligibility lists and injury reports.

Program Administration and Operations

Assist in developing and maintaining a comprehensive athletic healthcare system.

Oversee administration of concussion baseline and post‑injury testing and participate in annual concussion protocol reviews with the school nurse.

Develop and maintain the athletic training room schedule and daily operations.

Maintain a clean, safe, and organized environment in all athletic facilities including the training room, locker rooms, and weight room.

Equipment Management

Demonstrate proper techniques in taping, bracing, and fitting athletic equipment.

Advise on the selection, fitting, and maintenance of athletic gear.

Monitor facility conditions and equipment, and develop safety plans as needed.

Training, Education, and Supervision

Educate coaching staff on injury prevention, emergency procedures, and concussion management during seasonal meetings.

Supervise student aides or athletic training interns as applicable.

Maintain required certifications (BOC, CPR/AED, concussion training) and adhere to professional standards, including the NATA Code of Ethics.

Support Role

Support the Athletic Director with assigned duties related to the athletic program and health and safety of student‑athletes.
