Dental Assistant Expanded Function (Casual)
Schedule:
Casual, Day shift, 1‑2 days/week, typically Mondays and Wednesdays.
Purpose:
The Expanded Function Dental Assistant (EFDA) assists a licensed oral surgeon/dentist under their direction.
Responsibilities
Assist dentists and oral surgeons within the scope of practice as a Dental Assistant/Expanded Function Dental Assistant under direct supervision. Perform mouth mirror inspection, place and remove retraction chord, monitor and respond to post‑surgical bleeding, place amalgam for condensation, carve amalgams, remove sutures, dry canal, tie in archwire, apply topical fluoride and anesthetic, and place and remove dental dam.
Pour, trim, and evaluate diagnostic casts; size and place orthodontic bands and brackets; assist with basic restorative and surgical procedures; apply sealants; place orthodontic separators; size, fit, and place stainless steel crowns; take preliminary and final impressions.
Place and remove matrix bands; fabricate and place temporary crowns and fillings; remove permanent cement; fabricate custom trays, bleaching trays, and athletic mouth guards; perform coronal polishing; finish composite resin restorations.
Obtain patient/parental consent forms, ensure all paperwork and reports are included, and communicate concise, accurate information to the healthcare team.
Assist in training dental assistant students; shadow and assist students during rotations.
Perform radiographs as instructed and under direct supervision; develop images.
Maintain dental equipment and supplies, perform sterilization and infection control, manage biohazard waste handling, and organize operatories.
Ensure a safe environment for patients, comply with safety and regulatory requirements, and document treatments accurately.
Graduate of an approved Dental Assistant Program; hold a certificate from an approved Expanded Function Dental Assistant Program; possess at least one year of experience as a Dental Assistant.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances
Radiology Certification for capturing radiographs.
Expanded function dental assistant license from the Pennsylvania State Board of Dentistry.
Continuing education requirements to maintain license.
Basic Life Support (BLS).
