Pay Base pay range: $73,939.00 – $115,213.00 per year. (Salary may vary based on experience and skills.)

Summary Position: Speech‑Language Pathologist. Location: Aleda E. Lutz VA Medical Center, Saginaw, MI. Work setting: inpatient, outpatient, and home care. Responsibilities: Clinical assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and education for patients with speech, language, voice, swallowing, and cognitive‑communication disorders. Safety standard compliance required. Resume not required.

Qualifications

United States Citizenship. Non‑citizens may be appointed only when no qualified citizen can be recruited.

Education: Master’s degree in speech‑language pathology, communication disorders, or a directly related field from an accredited college or university, and one year of creditable experience; OR Doctoral degree in speech‑language pathology, communication disorders, and sciences or a related field from an accredited college or university.

Licensure: Full, current and unrestricted license to practice speech‑language pathology in a U.S. state, territory, commonwealth or the District of Columbia.

Foreign Education: Education completed outside the U.S. must be deemed at least equivalent by a private organization specializing in the interpretation of foreign credentials.

English Proficiency: Proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with 38 USC.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs)

Knowledge of principles and techniques in assessing and treating disorders of speech, language, cognitive‑communication and swallowing.

Knowledge of instrumentation and technologies for assessing and treating communication and swallowing disorders.

Ability to adapt clinical procedures and techniques to accommodate unique patient conditions, needs and goals.

Skill in applying principles and techniques of diagnosis and treatment associated with contemporary speech‑language pathology following evidence‑based practice for adult patients.

Skill in administering and interpreting instrumental swallowing evaluations.

Ability to assess the effectiveness of clinical outcomes and adapt clinical procedures and techniques to accommodate unique patient conditions.

Preferred experience: Parkinson’s disease treatment via a voice treatment protocol such as LOUD.

May qualify based on the Grandfathering Provision for current VHA employees meeting criteria.

Duties

Independently provide comprehensive clinical services for the speech section and team.

Conduct screening and diagnostic evaluations of patients presenting with a variety of communication and cognitive disorders; establish accurate diagnoses and treatment plans.

Conduct speech, voice, cognition and language therapy sessions; manage patients with motor speech disorders, aphasia, resulting from CVA, TBI or neuromuscular disorders.

Provide swallowing screenings and treatment for dysphagia; recommend diet management; reduce complications such as aspiration pneumonia, malnutrition and dehydration.

Manage tracheostomy/laryngectomy patients to maximize communication and swallowing per provider requests.

Educate patients and families regarding assessment results, progress and methods to maximize communication and swallowing.

Conduct augmentative and alternative communication evaluations and prescribe devices when indicated.

Collaborate with other medical specialists; make referrals as necessary.

Physical Requirements

Constant talking, hearing patients, families and VA team members.

Frequent reaching, standing, walking, repetitive motion, balancing, bending, kneeling.

Occasional lifting over 25–50 lbs for supplies or moving patients.

Occasional pushing, crouching.

Travel by government vehicle for community‑based clinics and home‑based care; valid driver’s license required.

Work Schedule Monday–Friday, 7:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m. Telework: Not available. Virtual: Not a virtual position.
