SUMMARY Under supervision of the Manager Laboratory Outreach Services or guidance of the Lead Phlebotomist, performs responsibilities associated with obtaining blood and various other patient specimens in accordance with department procedures. Obtains samples ordered by physicians for routine and specialized tests on assigned unit. Takes samples from pediatric and adult patients on outpatient units. Transports specimens and completes basic records. Fosters patient and family‑centered care and nursing services in accordance with the Brown University Health and The Miriam Hospital's mission, vision, values, with consideration of the life span, including all developmental stages and cultural patterns.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Perform various functions in the computer system to ensure proper collection and documentation of patient specimens.

Register patients and verify identification, demographics, insurance, guarantor, PCP, ordering provider, and diagnostic codes; enter test orders and handle medical necessity documentation.

Manage Advanced Beneficiary Notice (ABNSN) including obtaining supporting diagnostic codes, patient signature, and scanning.

Perform clerical activities such as medical necessity follow‑up, record sorting and filing, daily checklists, answering phones, report delivery, and receiving patients into the clinical treatment area.

Maintain and monitor standing orders for expiration and renewals, ensuring tasks are completed.

Provide patients with forms for tests, give instructions regarding any special preparation, and contact patients or outside agencies for additional information as needed.

Schedule venipunctures or capillary punctures according to priority and test type; ensure specimens are collected in compliance with procedures and universal precautions.

Verify patient identity, prepare for venipuncture (fasting, diet), and obtain blood samples using venipuncture or capillary techniques.

Alert nursing staff or supervisor to deviations or adverse patient conditions; collect additional specimen types (e.g., throat cultures) as required.

Perform any necessary specimen processing, including centrifuging and tracking; label, wrap, and transport samples per urgency and type; maintain records of sample procurement.

Follow all hospital policies, guidelines, protocols, and universal precautions in specimen collection.

Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education : High school diploma or GED required. Phlebotomy certificate from a National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences or completion of a phlebotomy certificate program with a formal internship demonstrating 100 successful venipunctures.

In lieu of an internship: 6 months of phlebotomy experience may be considered. In lieu of certification: 5+ years of direct phlebotomy experience may be considered.

Experience : Ability to perform venipuncture techniques and capillary puncture on adults, children, and infants; interpersonal skills to obtain and explain procedures effectively; knowledge of aging processes, human development stages, and cultural patterns; clerical skills to prepare and maintain records and reports; keyboard proficiency; familiarity with blood collector equipment, anticoagulants, special precautions and interference; color discrimination.

A Phlebotomy certificate is required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Works in an inpatient care environment with considerable walking between units; some physical effort may be required to manage uncooperative patients. Exposure to odors when handling specimens. Exposure to communicable diseases, mitigated by infection control procedures. Requires manual dexterity for venipuncture.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY None.

Pay Range:

$17.69–$27.90
