Summary This is a high containment laboratory animal husbandry position at the Animal Health Research Center (AHRC). The incumbent will perform all aspects of high containment animal husbandry with laboratory and agricultural animals in ABSL‑2, ABSL‑3, and ABSL‑3‑Ag environments. Duties include daily health observations, feeding, watering, cleaning, transport, enrichment, and various veterinary technical assistance. The role also involves cleaning and sanitation, equipment operation, facility maintenance, compliance record‑keeping, and participation in training and occupational health programs.

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent and at least 2 years of related experience.

Experience handling various animal species in a veterinary, research or laboratory setting; experience in ABSL‑2, ABSL‑3, or ABSL‑3Ag environments preferred.

Established communication, critical thinking, situational awareness, and teamwork skills; ability to work independently and adapt quickly to changing priorities.

Ability to listen and take direction.

Responsibilities

Perform daily animal care and husbandry duties for research animals.

Ensure animal welfare and compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.

Decontaminate, clean, sanitize animal rooms and equipment.

Operate equipment such as autoclaves, cage washers, biosafety cabinets, and bedding dump stations.

Set up and break down laboratories in accordance with research schedules.

Maintain supplies and equipment inventories; perform minor maintenance.

Initiate and maintain compliance records (logbooks, agent tracking logs, etc.).

Assist with technical services such as blood and tissue collections and medication administration.

Participate in training classes, occupational health, and safety programs.

Perform weekend and holiday duties as scheduled.

Physical Demands

Standing, bending, stooping, reaching, and lifting up to 50 pounds for sustained periods.

Transport, relocation, and positioning of supplies and caging equipment.

Work under high humidity/temperature, unpleasant odors, noise, and in PPE.

Daily showers (two or more).

Wear various PPE (PAPR, protective clothing, respirators, gloves).
