Position Summary A licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner is responsible for the performance of diagnostic testing and the administration of prescribed respiratory therapy procedures and medications, as well as related life‑support measures to patients with cardiopulmonary deficiencies, abnormalities, and diseases. The practitioner assesses patient condition, reviews medical history, and documents progress and response to treatment according to hospital and accrediting standards. The role includes communicating with physicians, making therapy recommendations, and collaborating with other licensed caregivers to maintain an interdisciplinary plan of care.
Responsibilities Level 1 – Minimal Competencies
Perform diagnostic testing and the administration of prescribed respiratory therapy.
Perform SVN therapy and MDI therapy on intubated and non‑intubated patients.
Perform incentive spirometry and document per facility guidelines.
Perform chest physiotherapy – manual or mechanical.
Perform sputum induction and appropriate documentation.
Perform arterial puncture, arterial line draws, and arterial blood gas/co‑oximetry analysis with critical value notification.
Perform bedside pulmonary function screening pre‑ and post‑bronchodilator, review data, and document.
Administer routinely prescribed inhaled medications and substitutions; clarify pharmacy orders.
Complete medication administration and MAR sign‑off as appropriate.
Initiate and maintain non‑invasive ventilation, mechanical ventilation, and transport ventilators per physician orders with documentation.
Perform daily maintenance, quality‑assurance measures, and cleaning of respiratory equipment; stock and maintain supplies.
Perform nasal/oral tracheal suction and operate closed suction systems.
Understand medical gas systems and zone valve locations.
Follow infection‑control standards for patient care and equipment processing.
Adhere to bundle protocols (VAP, pressure ulcers, universal precautions, etc.).
Perform appropriate weaning parameters and document.
Familiar with code cart locations, supplies, and defibrillator operation.
Provide appropriate oxygen and continuous aerosol therapy.
Respond to emergencies, code arrests, rapid‑response calls, and document appropriately.
Provide rescue breathing via bag‑mask, valve, or pocket mask.
Understand medication labeling and storage requirements.
Assist with other assigned or daily department responsibilities, including incident command system (HEICS) duties.
Clean, set up, and safety‑check ventilators, BiPAP/CPAP units, and related equipment.
Complete department paperwork such as badger exception log, daily assignment log, work schedules, and therapist worksheets.
Level 2 – Advanced Competencies/Duties
Coordinate departmental paperwork such as badger exception log.
Generate Kronos reports, daily assignment logs, work schedules, and therapist worksheets.
Participate in performance assessment and improvement processes.
Maintain blood‑gas & co‑ox log book and oversee related reporting.
Understand medical gas systems, zone valve locations, and perform back‑feeding procedures when indicated.
Train and act as a resource for respiratory department staff.
Recognize problems and suggest strategies to correct situations that may compromise clinical services.
Assist with bronchoscopies per facility guidelines, including cleaning and documentation.
May serve as Charge Therapist and contribute to program enhancement.
Perform other airway‑management skills per competency validation process, including arterial line placement, venous line insertion, and other procedures within scope of practice.
Education
Required:
Associate of Science in Respiratory Therapy (RCP associates hired prior to 03/01/11 are grandfathered and the degree is not required).
Preferred:
Bachelor of Science in a related field.
Licensure
Required:
Respiratory Care Practitioner license for Arizona.
Certificates
Required:
Registered Respiratory Therapist or Registry‑eligible; BLS.
CHVI Specific: PALS, ACLS within 6 months of hire and every two years.
Preferred:
Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Life Support, Newborn Resuscitation.
Experience
Required:
Clinical experience including adult, pediatric, and infant general med‑surg and critical‑care therapeutics and diagnostics.
Preferred:
One year recent experience in an acute‑care hospital.
Skills
Required:
Basic computer skills; verbal and written communication; proficiency in all phases of basic and advanced respiratory care (invasive and non‑invasive).
Preferred:
Electronic documentation experience; ability to perform complete PFTs and bronchoscopy procedures.
Knowledge
Required:
Respiratory Care Practice Act; familiarity with scientific process as it relates to respiratory care.
Preferred:
Familiarity with performance‑improvement process.
Technology
Required:
Proficiency with ventilators, monitors, gas analyzers, co‑oximeters, pulmonary function screeners.
Preferred:
Proficiency with complete pulmonary function analyzers, fiberoptic bronchoscopes, and special‑care nursery equipment.
Other
Required:
Ability to work flexible schedules, including holidays and weekends.
