About the Role The team's primary responsibility is to deliver the most remarkable patient experience—every dimension, every time. In this highly specialized role, the sonographer works closely with MFM physicians to provide high‑quality diagnostic ultrasound imaging, detailed fetal assessments, and exceptional care to high‑risk obstetric patients.

Essential Responsibilities

Clinical Imaging & Procedure Support

Independently perform detailed OB/GYN and high‑risk ultrasounds using advanced Doppler and imaging techniques.

Support physicians with ultrasound guidance during complex maternal‑fetal procedures including amniocentesis, CVS, and fetal interventions.

Critique and analyze images for quality and diagnostic value; repeat studies as necessary.

Documentation & Reporting

Accurately document patient prenatal history, current medications, and allergies.

Ensure appropriate consents are obtained prior to procedures.

Complete all EMR documentation and maintain required procedural logs.

Room & Equipment Preparation

Sterilize ultrasound probes per Novant Health’s Clinical Compliance protocols.

Disinfect and reset rooms between patients, ensuring all linens and supplies are replenished.

Verify equipment readiness and perform quality control as needed.

Patient Interaction & Human Experience

Explain procedures and findings in clear, compassionate language; use teach‑back techniques to confirm understanding.

Create an atmosphere that calms anxiety and earns patient trust, especially for those navigating high‑risk pregnancies.

Keep patients informed of visit timing, delays, and follow‑up steps.

Recognize and celebrate the uniqueness of each patient, modeling inclusion and empathy.

Team Collaboration & Professionalism

Communicate effectively with MFM physicians, nurses, and fellow sonographers.

Demonstrate adaptability and a willingness to assist across the team to meet departmental goals.

Participate actively in team meetings and quality improvement initiatives.

What We're Looking For

Education

Associate degree – 2‑Year / Associate Degree, required.

Graduate of AMA approved ultrasound program, ARDMS certified.

Experience

One year OB/GYN experience preferred.

Licensure / Certification

RDMS, OB required.

NT Certification preferred.

Must maintain ARDMS certification.

Must have current BLS certification upon hire and maintain throughout employment.

Additional Skills

Must be NT certified within first year of employment.

Excellent communication skills required.

Working knowledge of various ultrasound devices.

Ability to independently obtain high‑quality images needed to assist MFM physician with diagnosis.

Perform high‑level sterilization according to Clinical Compliance standards following each exam.

Ability to successfully complete departmental and organizational skills validation and competencies as required.

Able to assist MFM physician with complex procedures.

Ability to put patient at ease during ultrasound(s) and procedure(s).

Reconcile patient's medical and prenatal history, current medications, medication allergies, etc.

Demonstrate willingness to be flexible as needed to accomplish departmental needs and goals.
