General Description Under the general supervision of the Director Women’s Services, the Lactation Consultant plans, develops, implements, and evaluates comprehensive, individualized lactation support services according to standards identified by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners. The consultant provides consultation to in‑patient clinical staff, serves as a clinical expert for staff and patient education programs, and coordinates breastfeeding management across disciplines.
Key Responsibilities
Provide consultation to physicians, hospital staff, and patients in all care settings as requested.
Coordinate the patient’s management of breastfeeding with other disciplines as needed.
Provide outpatient clinical management and support to breastfeeding mothers, including follow‑up with discharged patients.
Market the program to the community through collaboration with Communications & Marketing.
Act as a clinical resource to staff on research‑based lactation management.
Provide ongoing staff education and assist in orientation of new staff.
Evaluate equipment and supplies for staff and patient use.
Maintain program and patient data, and provide monthly status reports to the MCH Supervisor regarding program quality metrics, statistics, and goal status.
Know fire, disaster, and safety procedures as they pertain to the work area.
Perform similar or related duties as assigned.
Requirements Formal Education:
Bachelor’s Degree required, major in Nursing or a health‑related field.
Work Experience:
2–3 years in a related role.
Required Licenses and Certifications:
State of Florida Registered Nurse (RN) active license.
Board Certified Lactation Consultant.
Basic Life Saving (BCLS) certification (or within probation period).
Advanced and/or Pediatric Life Saving (ACLS or PALS) certification or NRP, preferred.
EKG competency, if applicable.
