Respiratory Therapist Vascular Access Spec Job Summary and Responsibilities

Review physician orders, patient’s history and labs to determine appropriate line placement for the procedure. Identify potential issues or risk factors that may impede the patient’s candidacy or require alternative vascular access.

Obtain consent to perform the procedure for the appropriate line and provide patient teaching and education regarding line insertion, care and maintenance.

Insert and maintain appropriate lines per policy, including dressing changes, line review, port access and de‑clotting.

Utilize ultrasound technology to ensure accurate insertion. Maintain a sterile field throughout the entire procedure, determine accurate placement and receive or provide clearance via the appropriate method. Maintain accurate, timely and appropriate documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR).

Review chest X‑ray to ensure accurate placement of central lines. Utilize Sherlock 3CG+TCS display or chest X‑ray to ensure accurate placement of PICC lines.

Access and maintain infusion ports when needed.

Provide follow‑up care and maintenance of access sites.

Participate in interdisciplinary collaboration to provide recommendations for long‑term access needs.

Act as a resource to therapists and other healthcare professionals regarding patient status, equipment and operational issues.

Participate in monitoring quality initiatives, department tracking documentation and comply with quality standards, goals and objectives.

Job Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

(5) years of respiratory experience.

High School Diploma/GED.

Graduate of an AMA Respiratory Therapy Program required.

AZ Respiratory Therapist License.

National Registered Respiratory Therapist.

American Heart Association‑issued BLS certificate.

Preferred Qualifications

Completion of a central line training program.

Completion of a PICC training program.
