Direct Support Professional NFT (62000) – Volunteers of America Chesapeake & Carolinas
Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) support activities of people enrolled in programs and living in homes operated by Volunteers of America Chesapeake (VOAC). DSPs teach independent living skills, facilitate community integration, maintain safety, and contribute to program upkeep.
Responsibilities
Provides support for people as necessary to ensure needs as identified by the Inter-Disciplinary Team (IDT) are met.
Communicates with families, IDT members, day program, and other service providers as appropriate.
Instructs, supports, and participates in household tasks (cleaning, meal prep, grocery shopping) as outlined in the Individual Service Plan (ISP).
Assists people in developing daily living skills by addressing social, environmental, and healthcare needs.
Assists in grooming and personal care routines.
Implements Non-Violent Crisis Prevention Intervention responses as trained and specified in the Behavior Support Plan and ISP.
Responds to emergency medical situations, performs crisis intervention, and provides assistance as needed.
Plans, coordinates, and participates with people in social activities, including frequent community outings.
Transports people and/or provides mobility training for appointments, community programs, grocery shopping, etc.
Documents activities and behaviors of people in files, data sheets, log books, and electronic records.
Prepares food according to menu protocols, dietary needs, and preferences.
Attends staff meetings, training sessions, and program meetings as directed.
Ensures compliance with VOAC program requirements, environment-specific rules, and external regulations.
Inspects the home/program environment, reports repairs and maintenance needed, and participates in risk mitigation.
Participates in fire and emergency drills, ensuring safety procedures are followed.
Maintains proper sanitation and security within the home/program environment.
Notifies supervisor and monitors visitor activities.
Maintains up-to-date knowledge of VOAC policies and procedures.
Acts as a mandated reporter of suspected abuse, neglect, or exploitation.
Qualifications
High school diploma, GED, and/or IEP.
At least 1 year of experience working with intellectual/developmental or related populations (exceptions may apply for less than one year with enhanced supervision until qualifications are met).
Medication Administration Certification preferred and may be required by the end of the introductory period.
Pass all state required trainings and new hire orientation; maintain certifications as required by CMS or other governing entities.
Computer skills for documentation.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Problem‑solving abilities.
Pass background checks and drug testing.
Bilingual language skills are a plus.
Preferred Experience
Experience in residential settings serving people with intellectual/developmental disabilities or other special‑needs populations (rehabilitation, nursing homes, psychiatric hospitals, behavioral health settings).
Experience working with medically fragile individuals or those with physical limitations.
Credentialed employees must maintain ongoing training, certifications, and be compliant with all program requirements to remain employed.
Physical Requirements
Safe operation of a motor vehicle for transporting people and supplies.
Operation of office equipment requiring continuous or repetitive hand/arm movement.
Ability to remain seated for extended periods.
Capacity to travel to assigned locations, stand, stoop, bend, reach, lift, grasp, climb, speak, see, and hear.
Ability to lift light objects up to 30 pounds.
Ability to transfer, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move persons and objects, including using routine assistance and during emergencies.

Maintains program operation in compliance with VOAC policies, licensing, Medicaid regulations, and other governing bodies.
