Veterinary Student Externship - Bay State Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Services United Veterinary Care is delighted to host veterinary students for externships! This valuable clinical experience allows you to apply classroom knowledge in an animal hospital of your choice. Our hands‑on externships are designed exclusively for veterinary students at AVMA‑accredited schools in their clinical years (3rd or 4th year). To make externships accessible we offer stipends to offset travel and lodging costs, unless prohibited by your veterinary school.

Eligibility Requirements

Must be a current veterinary student at an AVMA‑accredited veterinary school.

Priority scheduling is given to students in their clinical years on official externship blocks for school credit.

Must provide proof of professional liability insurance. SAVMA members qualify for no‑cost insurance by applying at the following link: SAVMA Member Benefit and Resources | AVMA PLIT.

Hospital Information Bay State Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Services is an exceptional 24‑hour emergency and specialty referral center located in Swansea, MA. It offers referral and emergency services to RI, eastern CT and southern MA. Highly trained emergency doctors and nursing staff oversee inpatient care 24/7. The newly renovated facility offers Internal Medicine, Surgery, Radiation Oncology, and Medical Oncology. Our sister hospital, Ocean State Veterinary Specialists, is located 30 minutes away.

What to Expect From Your Externship During your externship, you will actively participate in cases and further your development toward becoming a veterinarian. You will be supervised by an experienced veterinarian and skilled support staff who serve as mentors. If there are specific technical skills you wish to improve, let us know so we can emphasize those areas. Externs are encouraged to actively engage with clients, listen to patient history, conduct preliminary exams, and formulate diagnostic and treatment plans. Externs may select one case per week to research and share with veterinarians during case discussions, fostering mutual learning.

UVC offers externs a $600/week stipend (up to 4 weeks total across all UVC locations) as allowed by your educational institution.
