Phlebotomist (part time) Location:

Purpose This position is responsible for accurately performing phlebotomy and specimen collection of inpatients and/or outpatients. Samples collected are essential for laboratory test procedures that diagnose and treat patients. The Phlebotomist may also perform computer, courier, and clerical functions that are essential to laboratory operations and works under the supervision of the Medical Technologists.

Responsibilities

Interact courteously with all laboratory customers and respond to telephone inquiries promptly.

Using proper patient identification procedures, procure appropriate blood specimens by venipuncture, heelstick, or fingerstick and instruct patients on collection procedures when required.

Demonstrate dependability, reliability, and independent judgment recognizing priorities to accommodate department needs and accept appropriate authority.

Transport specimens from on- and off-site collection areas to the appropriate laboratory section following established safety procedures.

Adhere to established laboratory and hospital policies in procedures, methods, quality control, safety, hand hygiene, and proper isolation precautions.

Enter demographic information into the information system(s) and manage order entry, cancellation, charging, and crediting of tests while verifying sample identity.

Train and orient new employees, students, and residents as applicable and assigned.

Inform technical staff, supervisory personnel, and/or pathologists of any unusual or problematic incidents.

May perform arterial puncture following strict guidelines.

Monitor and maintain supplies for which the position is responsible using materials and reagents cost-effectively.

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent (required).

Certification from an accredited Phlebotomy or Medical Assistant program (preferred).

Minimum 6 months experience performing phlebotomy (preferred).

Medical terminology knowledge and laboratory information system experience (preferred).

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances

Phlebotomy Technician (PBT(ASCP)) or equivalent certification (preferred).

Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal.

Act 33 with renewal.

Act 34 with renewal.

Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal.
