The incumbent is responsible for providing group psychotherapy on inpatient units, residential, and partial hospital programs, along with individual therapy focused on the application and acquisition of skills addressed in groups. Group formats include educational, social interaction, and community‑making frameworks. The therapist works with the unit’s Inpatient Group Coordinator to facilitate group experiences and supports the needs of the client population. The role also participates in hospital activities, including committees, teaching, training, and research as time allows.

Essential Functions

Provides group and/or individual therapy to clients as assigned, with interventions structured appropriately for the specific clientele served.

Responsible for setup before and clean‑up after group sessions.

Supports the Group Therapy Coordinator in assessment, evaluation, and development of the group therapy program on the unit.

Creates a non‑judgmental environment where clients can process and verbalize insight and awareness of issues.

Documents inpatient hospital group forms within established time parameters and in accordance with hospital procedures.

Provides consultation and evaluation to clinical teams and other units based on specific areas of expertise/training.

Alerts appropriate staff of emergent clinical issues that occur during group sessions.

Reviews and contributes to the specified program’s Group Resources Manual, detailing group descriptions, goals, methods, and resources.

Follows all established group therapy protocols.

Maintains contact with other clinical staff and unit leadership through participation in rounds, staff meetings, multidisciplinary meetings, treatment planning meetings, and other meetings as necessary.

Reports to identified program lead as appropriate for supervision and performance review.

Education Bachelor’s Degree in a Related Field of Study required. Master’s Degree in a Related Field of Study required.

Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist [MA]

Occupational Therapist [MA]

Counselor [Licensed Alcohol & Drug Counselor - LADC - MA]

Licensed Mental Health Counselor [LMHC - MA]

Psychologist [MA]

Experience Group and individual therapy experience 1‑2 years required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Organized, timely, and possess good interpersonal skills to communicate effectively within a multi‑disciplined team.

Ability to set and maintain appropriate boundaries.

Experience with empirically supported/validated group therapy skills (CBT, ACT, MI, DBT) is preferred.

Familiarity with hospital/partial‑hospital or community‑based treatment programs.

Active interest in clinical care issues related to inpatient psychiatric treatment.

Basic computer skills to use a variety of electronic systems (including Microsoft Office) to access/maintain personal employment‑related data, satisfy required annual training, use job‑specific applications, and complete documentation using the electronic medical record (experience with the Epic platform preferred).
