Overview
We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate – Meteorologist who will focus on the development, testing, and deployment of data analysis methods for a variety of national security, proliferation detection, and nuclear forensics applications. This position resides in the Collection Science and Engineering Group in the Material Characterization and Modeling Section, Nuclear Nonproliferation Division, Nuclear Security Sciences Directorate, at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
Major Duties / Responsibilities The responsibilities include conceptualizing and performing research on the variables associated with nuclear fuel‑cycle processes; the fate, transport, dispersion, collection, and measurement of such variables; and the analysis of these data to more clearly understand the original processes involved, and the use and application of AI/ML techniques to national security problems.
Familiarity in the following areas are helpful:
Application of AI/ML techniques for real‑time, real‑world data
Transport and dispersion modeling
Fate modeling of materials in the atmosphere
Applied statistics
Data analytics

Basic Qualifications
A PhD degree in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, or a related discipline.
A minimum of 1 year of experience with the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) and the HYbrid Single Particle Lagrangian Integration Transport (HYSPLIT) models.
Experience in advanced multivariate techniques.
Demonstrated problem‑solving skills, a willingness to apply those skills to a variety of problems, and the ability to determine and understand the broader context of his or her research.
Preferred Qualifications
Proficiency in multiple modern coding languages is preferred; experience using Python, R, and/or OriginLab is highly desirable.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Motivated self‑starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
Ability to function well in a fast‑paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever‑changing needs.
Appointment & Eligibility Applicants cannot have received their Ph.D. more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. The appointment length will be up to 24 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and availability of funding.

To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation. For Foreign National Candidates
If you have not resided in the U.S. for three consecutive years, you are not eligible for the PIV credential and instead will need to obtain a favorable Local Site Specific Only (LSSO) risk determination to maintain employment.
Once you meet the three‑year residency requirement, you will be required to obtain a PIV credential to maintain employment.
