Base pay: $122,117.00/yr - $244,235.00/yr (as provided by NYS Office for People With Developmental Disabilities)

Job Summary As a Medical Specialist, you will actively participate in diagnosing and treating patients within your specialized field and advise and confer with members of other disciplines so that patients may receive the benefits of an overall specialized program of care. Medical Specialists 2 serve as senior practicing specialists within a recognized discipline of medicine.

Responsibilities

Assist in the development or revision of medical policy and procedures when needed to ensure the provision of quality care.

Review lab work, specialty consults, hospital discharges, medical visit summaries and diagnostic reports to assist the group home RN and treatment team provide the best care for complex cases.

Discuss care with hospital or rehabilitation facility providers to share clinical information and ensure continuity of care between the group home, hospital, rehabilitation setting, and community providers.

Review and approve discharge summaries prior to accepting an individual back into the group home residence.

Review medical information for new admissions to a residence to ensure appropriate care can be provided.

Communicate with team members regarding medical issues and participate in team meetings, either in person or virtually.

Communicate with family members and advocates to explain medical or treatment issues.

Provide short‑term urgently needed prescription renewals when a community medical provider may be unavailable.

Function as a member of an interdisciplinary treatment team, attend meetings, and serve on various committees and workgroups to improve individual services and outcomes.

Provide after‑hours and weekend on‑call medical telephone consult on a rotating basis.

Provide coverage of primary medical care for people living in a Comprehensive Adult Transitional Home if required when the assigned provider is not available.

Provide medical expertise to Family Care Program and Community Mental Health Nurses as needed.

Assist with physician coverage as needed in sister regions.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a license to practice medicine in New York State (limited license/permit option available).

Certification by a Member Board of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) in your specialty.

Not listed as an excluded individual or entity on any Federal and/or State Medicaid and Medicare exclusion lists.

Ability to become an enrolled Medicare provider, obtain an NPI number, and participate in billing through Medicare and Medicaid.

Maintain license, limited permit, or board certification in New York State; failure to maintain may result in removal from the position.

Additional Comments This title is part of the NY HELPS program, a non‑competitive appointment path. Employees appointed under NY HELPS are expected to convert to permanent competitive status within one year of permanent appointment.

If you are a current New York State employee in a permanent competitive qualifying title and eligible for a transfer, you may be appointed as a permanent competitive employee.

Preference will be given to OPWDD employees impacted by closures.

All OPWDD employees must maintain eligibility for full participation in Medicare and Medicaid.

Employees may be eligible for Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF).

Employees on long‑term leave must be able to report to work within fourteen (14) days.
