SUMMARY
Under the supervision of the Medical Director and the Lifeguard EMS Program Coordinator, the Critical Care Paramedic delivers patient care, training, equipment use and maintenance, and research efforts. The role includes maintaining clinical skills, assisting in the design of training curricula and research protocols, and developing procedures for patient care, research, program development, outreach, and training objectives. The position does not supersede the RN role in patient care once responsibility for a patient is transferred from the critical care paramedic to the RN. RESPONSIBILITIES
Perform patient care at incident scenes and during critical care transport in accordance with established standards, protocols and policies under the supervision of the physician medical director (or designee).
Provide comprehensive, effective and safe care to any patient transported by Lifeguard EMS.
Participate in training of emergency care personnel (EMTs, students, first responders, residents, attending physicians, nurses and others) including curricula development, precepting, mentoring, simulation‑based training, conferences and other techniques.
Assist in development of patient care protocols and training curricula, and in other research and patient care efforts.
Attend required staff and educational meetings and remain current with relevant literature.
Participate in the design and conduct of experiments, including enrollment of study subjects, according to established protocols and research methodology.
Assist in writing presentations and papers for publication and may present findings at conferences.
Complete patient documentation (written and electronic) per Rhode Island Hospital and The Rhode Island Department of Health: Division of EMS, in a timely fashion to expedite billing.
Perform public education, marketing and outreach and maintain a cheerful, positive attitude toward patients and families, co‑workers, staff of other facilities and the public.
Maintain a clean operational environment, retrieve, stock and clean medical equipment.
Report to remote locations for duty and respond to on‑call for emergencies, disasters and major incidents.
Perform data entry and clerical assistance.
Assist with Emergency Department communications and dispatch at the communications center.
QUALIFICATIONS
Current State of Rhode Island EMT‑Paramedic license with a minimum of five years field EMS experience.
Current Paramedic certification through the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians.
Current ACLS, BLS, and PALS certifications (instructor status preferred). CCEMTP and/or FP‑C, ATLS (audit), BTLS, PHTLS and NRP preferred.
Valid and current driver’s license and a clean driving record.
Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences, Nursing or a related field preferred.
Ability to read, speak, legibly write and comprehend English without restriction.
Working knowledge of statistics, verbal and written English communication skills, computer use and research methodology.
CCEMTP certification within one year of employment; course and certification approved by The University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC).
Emergency Vehicle Operators Course (EVOC) certification within one year of employment.
Positive communication skills and adherence to Lifeguard EMS policies and procedures.
Uphold safety standards set by Rhode Island Hospital and The Rhode Island Department of Health.
Maintain clinical skill proficiency and knowledge base covering patient assessment, invasive line placement, medication dosing, airway management, hemodynamic monitoring, ECG interpretation, intra‑aortic balloon pump management, ventilator management and RSI.
Prepared for unrestricted travel in ambulances, cars, trucks, boats, airplanes and helicopters.
Demonstrated knowledge and skills to provide care to patients with considerations of aging processes, human development stages and cultural patterns.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Perform in cramped quarters, any weather condition, and other risks including hazardous materials.
Maintain physical condition that allows running, climbing, carrying medical equipment and lifting patients (up to 175 pounds with two people).
Freely move in standing, walking, running, sitting, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, swimming, balancing, bending and twisting.
Lift, carry, push/pull 100 lbs or more and perform CPR, utilize patient lifting devices and perform fine motor skills (e.g., IV insertion, scalpel use).
Have adequate vision and hearing for driving, reading, alarms, radios and other job tasks; color discrimination for identifying labels and placards.
Demonstrated dynamic strength (stairs with equipment and patients), explosive strength (running up stairs), static strength (carry equipment, lift patients) and stamina (climb flights of stairs, perform CPR for long periods).
EXPERIENCE Five years in emergency medical care, including training and research in that field.
WORK ENVIRONMENT Variable environment, including in‑hospital and out‑of‑hospital emergency care situations, disaster situations with exposure to unknown substances and/or risks, ill and injured patients, training environments, research and simulation settings. Requires travel in vehicles including ambulances and aircraft and attendance at conferences nationwide.

PAY RANGE Pay Range: $28.61–$46.77 per hour
