Overview

The 6th floor is a Surgical unit specializing in the care of patients before and after surgical procedures, with medical overflow support. The unit operates with a ratio of approximately 4:1 to 5:1 and serves a variety of surgical populations.

Role

PRN Level 4. 144 hours per 8 weeks (12 shifts), including 6 (12-hour) weekend shifts and 3 holidays. Under limited supervision, provides assessment and care planning for patients; performs complex patient-care procedures within the area of expertise; collaborates with the Care Team and Support Team to achieve patient outcomes as defined by the pathway and plan of care. Patients served include all age groups (Infant through Older Adult, as identified in Performance Standards).

Responsibilities and Tasks

Provide unit-specific and hospital-based patient care; practice independently with solid knowledge and clinical skills; integrate evidence into practice.

Be accountable to patients and families for care processes and outcomes; collaborate with peers to advance practice on the unit and with the nurse manager for performance.

Collaborate with interdisciplinary team to plan and coordinate care addressing patient/family needs; serve as clinical resource as needed.

Participate in Nursing Sensitive Quality Indicators (NSQI) improvement efforts.

Comply with standards and support regulatory compliance activities.

Support leader and charge nurse decisions; act as a primary coordinating nurse as required.

Model practice consistent with unit operations to ensure safe, timely, effective, efficient, equitable, patient-centered care.

Follow and support AACN guidelines for Healthy Work Environment; participate as a team member focusing on communication, collaboration, decision making, recognition, leadership, and staffing.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Patient Safety

Take action to correct observed risks to patient safety.

Report adverse events and near misses to appropriate management.

Identify risks in processes, procedures, and devices and communicate with leadership.

Unit Description

The 6th floor Surgical unit focuses on perioperative care and related services, with dedicated rehab partners and a therapy gym on the unit.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Maryland or eligible to practice under MD Board of Nursing compact state agreements.

Associate’s degree required; BSN preferred.

One (1) year of RN experience required.

AHA BLS required upon hire.

Must meet unit-specific certification requirements (PALS, ACLS, NRP).

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Maintain competencies for the patient care setting; strong clinical skills and professional development orientation.

Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.

Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team; use computer systems to manage patient information.

Demonstrate understanding of developmental life span needs and age-appropriate patient assessment.

Willingness to participate in the PRN RN Standardized Program as required by unit expectations.

Compensation

Pay Range: $50 per hour
