Job Description Respiratory Therapist PRN

Description:

Cardiopulmonary Services & Neurodiagnostic (Respiratory) – The scope of the diagnostic and therapeutic services provided by the Cardiopulmonary & Neurodiagnostic Department includes Respiratory Care Therapies, EKG, Holter Monitor Services, and EEG Studies.

The certified respiratory therapist assesses, treats, and monitors patients with respiratory diseases and conditions. This includes the delivery of medicated and non‑medicated therapy as ordered by the provider. Therapists also provide invasive and non‑invasive mechanical ventilator support for acute respiratory failure. As part of patient assessment and management, the therapist performs diagnostic test procedures and assists in departmental operations through quality improvement projects, equipment, and supplies. The certified therapist follows all applicable rules and regulations established by the licensure board for the state in which respiratory therapy is practiced.

Responsibilities

Responds to emergencies (code blue, rapid response) and high‑risk deliveries; provides care to compromised newborns

Manages airways including endotracheal and tracheostomy tubes

Assesses and monitors patients on invasive/non‑invasive ventilation; adjusts settings as ordered

Performs or assists with advanced procedures (intubation, arterial lines, bronchoscopy)

Administers prescribed respiratory medications via nebulizer or MDI using safe practices

Performs therapeutic procedures (chest physiotherapy, oscillating PEP, PEP)

Provides and adjusts oxygen therapy per patient needs and orders

Completes patient assessments, makes care recommendations, and educates patients/families

Performs pulmonary function testing per national standards

Completes neurodiagnostic studies (EEG) and cardiac testing (12‑lead ECG, Holter monitoring)

Obtains arterial and capillary blood gases; analyzes and interprets results

Completes and documents oximetry studies

Documents assessments, therapies, and patient information in the medical record

Communicates patient information for continuity of care (shift reports, transfers)

Educates peers and students; participates in debriefs, quality improvement, and safety activities

Reviews and responds to departmental communications; attends meetings and in‑services

Communicates concerns and events to departmental leadership

Cleans, prepares, and maintains respiratory equipment and analyzers

Evaluates, communicates, and manages equipment and supply needs

Requirements

Mandatory certification in respiratory therapy (Kentucky Board of Respiratory Care) or respiratory license (Indiana Professional Licensing Agency) appropriate for facility location

Registered Respiratory Therapist by the National Board for Respiratory Care

Must obtain Neonatal Resuscitation Program certification within 6 months (for therapists working with the neonatal population)

Basic Life Support is required. New employees requiring CPR‑Basic Life Support (BLS)–American Heart Association should receive training within the first week of orientation
