Regulatory Requirements
Current Respiratory Therapist Licensure of the State of Maine
Graduate of an AMA‑approved School of Respiratory Therapy
Neonatal Resuscitation certification (preferred)
Current American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS Certification (required)
A minimum of one year of respiratory care (preferred)
Competencies
Knowledge of oxygen delivery methods and associated equipment; awareness of potential side effects
Administration of respiratory therapy treatments with understanding of purpose and side effects
Setup and monitoring of mechanical ventilators, airway management, and tracheal suctioning
Assessment of pain that may impede optimal function or participation in rehabilitation, with appropriate physician communication
Performing arterial punctures for blood gas analysis while recognizing complications and contraindications
Understanding differences in treatment modalities for neonate, pediatric, adolescent, geriatric, and general patient populations
Knowledge of oxygen concentrations and medication dosing across patient age groups
