Summary of Primary Function / General Purpose of Position The New‑to‑Practice Stepdown Registered Nurse (RN) provides, coordinates, plans, and evaluates nursing care within established procedures, professional standards, and organizational policies. The RN demonstrates the ability to care for a group of patients in a fast‑paced, high‑intensity setting as part of an interprofessional team focused on achieving the best individual and population outcomes. Core cultural and safety behaviors are demonstrated to eliminate preventable harm, ensure worker safety, and provide a high‑quality experience of care.

Essential Job Functions

Collaborate with an experienced Stepdown RN and interdisciplinary team members to demonstrate safe basic knowledge of contemporary nursing practice.

Apply nursing process with patients of all ages and populations.

Conduct initial and ongoing patient assessment, analyze data, create a plan of care, implement treatment, and evaluate effectiveness.

Administer medications safely in accordance with state practice and BSMH policies.

Serve as point of contact for patient care coordination throughout hospital departments.

Act as a patient safety advocate by participating in ongoing quality improvement and collaborating with spiritual care, palliative, and ethics when needed.

Serve as a point person for care coordination for family members or caregivers.

Clinically manage patients with multi‑system organ failure and/or multisystem trauma.

Use the AACN Synergy Model to restore, support, promote, rehabilitate, or palliate to maintain patients’ physiologic, psychologic, and psychosocial stability across the lifespan.

Synthesize and prioritize information to take immediate, evidence‑based, patient‑focused action using clinical judgment.

Anticipate and respond with confidence and adapt to rapidly changing patient conditions.

Respond to the unique needs of patients and families coping with unanticipated illness or injury, advocating for their choices in quality of life.

Licensing / Certification

Current RN license in state of employment, compact, or RN applicant (required).

BLS Basic Life Support or ACLS Advanced Cardiac Life Support (preferred at hire; must obtain from approved source prior to direct patient care; ACLS required within 6 months of hire).

Education Bachelor of Science in Nursing (preferred).

Work Experience Previous experience as an LPN or Patient Care Tech/CNA (preferred).

Training

EPIC Electronic Health Record (EHR) training (preferred).

Completion of RN Residency Program within 18 months of hire (required).

Inserts and monitors transvenous pacing/temporary pacing.

Administers means for conscious sedation.

Knowledge of advanced respiratory modalities.

Working Conditions

Periods of high stress and fluctuating workloads may occur.

Provides age‑appropriate care on assigned unit.
