Patient Care Technician II – PRN (MUSC Health)
The Patient Care Technician (PCT) reports to the Nurse Manager and works under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse. The PCT performs multi‑skilled activities to support a decentralized, patient‑centered approach to care and achieve desired outcomes. Key duties include measuring and documenting vital signs, identifying patient concerns, moving or turning patients as needed, and providing emotional support.
Responsibilities
Keep patient rooms tidy and sanitized
Assist patients with everyday needs (personal hygiene, restroom use, grooming, etc.)
Monitor vital signs (temperature, pulse, EKG, patient condition)
Assist nursing staff in administering basic treatments
Ensure rooms have adequate supplies and linens are clean
Provide appropriate emotional support
Place patients on cardiac monitor
Empty drains, ostomy bags, Foley catheters
Perform blood sugar checks
Assist with other duties assigned by the department leader
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required; one year of patient care experience preferred.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required upon hire and must be maintained (AHA or Red Cross).
Good communication, organizational, and empathy skills.
Ability to work rotating shifts and overtime as needed.
Physical Requirements The position requires the ability to stand, sit, walk continuously; climb stairs occasionally; perform manual tasks such as lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs. and operating a cardiac monitor. Good vision and hearing are required. The role may involve working in confined spaces, at elevated areas, and in temperature extremes.
Additional Information Minimum requirements: at least 1 year of experience in a PCT I position at MUSC or comparable patient care work. Tuition may be considered for candidates enrolled in nursing or related programs. The role is a PRN (as‑needed) position.
