Hiring Range $62,608 - $75,000

Hours & Schedule Full‑time with benefits, 40 hours per week. Shift structure: 12‑hour shifts, 4 hours of administrative work time, and a 6‑week rotational schedule. Responders work one out of every three weekends and have a six‑ to seven‑day break every six weeks. Schedule details will be discussed during the interview.

About the Role DCSD is hiring for Crisis Response Clinicians across three program areas:

Crisis Call Diversion:

Licensed clinicians triage, assess, and respond remotely to behavioral‑health–related 911 calls, supporting in‑person response and follow‑up when needed.

Community Response Team:

Clinicians join 2‑3‑person teams (Crisis Response Clinician, Peer Support Specialist, and/or EMT) to respond to behavioral‑health and quality‑of‑life calls without law enforcement. Clinicians lead the team, perform assessment, intervention, and de‑escalation.

Co‑Response:

Clinicians work alongside a Crisis Intervention Trained (CIT) police officer on high‑risk calls, providing assessment, therapeutic intervention, and de‑escalation with the officer.

Duties / Responsibilities

Respond to 911 calls involving behavioral health, substance use, intellectual/developmental disabilities, and quality‑of‑life crises using people‑centered, trauma‑informed strategies.

Collaborate closely with team members to assess needs, de‑escalate situations, and provide therapeutic interventions.

Screen and evaluate individuals in crisis, develop care plans, and identify barriers to treatment.

Provide follow‑up support and ensure connection to appropriate services through warm handoffs or transport.

Maintain knowledge of DSM‑5 criteria, especially for substance use, severe mental illness, and intellectual/developmental disabilities.

Document all interventions accurately and in compliance with program and regulatory requirements.

Build and maintain positive relationships with clients, staff, community partners, and agencies.

Participate in supervision, case conferences, trainings, and professional development activities.

Contribute to departmental planning and culture, focusing on effective crisis response.

Demonstrate resilience, self‑care, and wellness practices essential to first responder roles.

Minimum Qualifications & Experience

Master’s degree in social work, psychology, or related human services field **or** provisionally licensed or fully licensed professional in one of the following:

Licensed or Provisionally Licensed Clinical Addiction Specialist (LCAS/A)

Licensed or Provisionally Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LCMHC/A)

Licensed or Provisionally Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW/A)

Licensed or Provisionally Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT/A)

Two years of relevant experience.

Ability to maintain confidentiality, including HIPAA confidentiality, at all times.

Must be able to travel within Durham and to worksites.

Must be able to walk/stand up to 75% of any shift.

Additional Preferred Skills

Track record of initiative and sound judgment in ambiguous situations.

Commitment to the department’s mission of enhancing public safety through community‑centered prevention and intervention.

Commitment to equity, including participation in racial equity training.

Experience working with Peer Support Specialists or individuals with lived experience in behavioral and mental health crises.

Prior outreach/engagement experience with populations experiencing frequent behavioral and mental health or intellectual/developmental disability crises.

Knowledge and experience with documentation, HIPAA standards, utilization review, and data management.

Ability to speak two or more languages, priority given to Spanish.

Familiarity with Durham health systems and community resources.

Advanced collaboration and interpersonal skills.

Affection for Durham and its communities (living in Durham preferred).
