The Intra-Operative Monitoring Technician provides neurophysiologic monitoring during orthopedic, neurosurgical and vascular procedures. Studies include brain and spinal cord monitoring with somatosensory evoked potentials, motor evoked potentials, EEG, EMG, pedicle screw testing, brainstem auditory evoked potentials, facial nerve and other cranial nerve monitoring. Additional areas of study include long‑term EEG for pre‑surgical evaluation and intra‑operative electrocorticography for epilepsy surgery. This position provides direct patient care and may be required to access and administer medications within their scope of practice and according to state law.

Responsibilities

Communicates with surgical staff to establish correct site, type of surgery, and placement of equipment in room.

Recognizes desired waveforms or activity as well as artifact.

Troubleshoots equipment malfunctions.

Works closely with the department manager, medical director, and IONM in daily functions and operations of department.

Applies knowledge of neuron anatomy and normal physiological function.

Reports all observed patient concerns and changes in condition.

Ensures patient safety relative to history and contraindications for specific stimulation or monitoring techniques.

Removes electrodes and cleans up patients post monitoring period.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills.

Ability to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit.

Demonstrated knowledge of the principles of life span growth and development and the ability to assess data regarding the patient's status and provide care as described in the department's policies and procedures manual.

Knowledge of the accepted guidelines and criteria for sterile procedures and infection control and of alternate montages, protocols, alternate equipment settings and their effects.

Qualifications Required

Bachelor's degree in a healthcare discipline.

Completion of R.EEG T, R.EP T, or R.NCS T course and maintenance of subsequent registration.

Four (4) years of hands‑on patient care experience.

CNIM registry eligibility within 12 months of hire.

Licenses Required

Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system. The eCredential is to be obtained within 30 days of hire.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands Employee must be able to meet the following requirements with or without an accommodation.

This position involves intermediate working conditions in a healthcare setting that may exert up to 50 pounds and may consistently require lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, or otherwise moving patients or objects, such as medical equipment, while providing patient care.
