JOB TYPE

JOB SUMMARY Performs echocardiography studies for patients from the antenatal period to age 21 who have acquired or congenital heart disease, as well as adult congenital heart disease, calculates, interprets, and analyzes the hemodynamic data served from echocardiography studies.

Patient Care

Explains the procedure and post‑procedure orders to the patient to gain cooperation and minimize anxiety.

Prioritizes workflow in regard to patient condition and ensures patient arrival and departure occur in a timely manner.

Provides an atmosphere conducive to gaining the patient’s cooperation and confidence.

Utilizes data received from patient satisfaction and practice performance results to identify opportunities to improve and participates in the planning and improvement process.

Compliance

Cleans examination surfaces between patients.

Provides clean linen including sheets, gowns, pillowcases, and towels.

Immediately cleans spills following universal precautions.Properly stores accessory equipment when not in use.

Teamwork

Shares and initiates regular and professional communication with co‑workers.

Facilitates and participates in regular staff meetings.

Technical Competency

Maintains sterile equipment and fields.

Adjusts cameras to obtain the proper density and contrast.

Performs any necessary warm‑up and quality control procedures on the equipment.

Uses protocols to obtain images of internal structures.

Critiques images for quality and makes necessary judgments to determine if a repeat is necessary.

Additional responsibilities may be assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS Education:

2‑year/Associate Degree required. A graduate of an accredited echocardiography school or having the equivalent in experience.

Experience:

2 years of echocardiography experience preferred. 1 year of pediatric experience required. 1 year of fetal echocardiography experience preferred. Refer to the Life Support Training Policy for additional details.

Licensure:

1. Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) in Pediatric Echocardiography (PE) through the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) or Registered Congenital Cardiac Sonographer (RCCS) through Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI). 2. OR Adult Echocardiography (RDCS‑AE or RCS) AND minimum experience of 1 year within an Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC)‑Accredited Facility and registry eligible in pediatric echo. 3. Obtain certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days of hire date. Prefer credentialed in Fetal Echo via ARDMS (within 1 yr from date of hire).

Additional Skills/Requirements Required:

Responsible for obtaining transthoracic echocardiograms including real time, pulsed Doppler, continuous wave Doppler, color Doppler in the pediatric population. Compiles data required by the pediatric cardiologist on all studies. Responsible for doing all other duties that may be assigned at the discretion of the manager and/or the Medical Director in addition to proper billing of the procedures and prioritizing patient scheduling.

Additional Skills/Requirements Preferred:

Knowledge of normal and congenital cardiac anatomy and physiology, palliative repairs of congenital heart defects, adult congenital imaging with current and formerly used palliative repairs, genetic syndromes and associated congenital heart defects, arrhythmias and associated congenital heart defects. Additional skills preferred for fetal: Knowledge of fetal cardiac anatomy and physiology, basic obstetrical ultrasound, genetic syndromes and associated congenital heart defects, maternal medication/drug use and associated congenital heart defects and/or arrhythmias.
