Dental Assistant – Chugachmiut Summary:

Provides chair‑side assistance and related duties in all phases of general dentistry, including clinical sterilization, maintenance, patient care for all age groups, and support of dental programs throughout the Chugach Region.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Improves patient experience and quality of care through optimal patient access, continuity, and team‐based care.

Prepares operatory before appointments, setting up sterile instrument trays, radiographs, handpieces, materials, and supplies.

Organizes and lays out instruments and materials needed for each treatment.

Greets and seats patients in a friendly, professional, and courteous manner; takes vital signs and prepares patients for dental treatment.

Records patient medical history and informs the dentist of any medical issues or drug allergies.

Performs digital scans, digital and panoramic X‑rays.

Assists with patient data entry into dental software programs.

Provides chair‑side assistance throughout all phases of general dentistry, including tissue retraction, high‑speed evacuation, passing instruments, preparing materials, and maintaining a dry field.

Applies fluoride treatments, including trays, varnish, and rinses.

Provides patients with post‑treatment oral care instructions.

Maintains operatories neat, orderly, and within standards for clean, sterile procedures.

Assists with schedule maintenance, patient appointment scheduling, referrals, and prior authorizations.

Prepares and maintains instruments, supplies, and equipment according to protocol and manufacturer guidelines.

Maintains trays, tubs, instrument packs, mobile carts, and supplies in an organized and uniform manner.

Cleans, prepares, and maintains operatories, lab areas, central sterilization, and tray setup areas.

Cleans, sharpens, sterilizes instruments using autoclave and dryclav techniques, and maintains records of these procedures.

Ensures appropriate infection control measures pre‑ and post‑treatment.

Routes patients for dental treatment and required services.

Manages inventory and orders clinic supplies to meet community dental care needs; packs and manages equipment for villages when requested.

Adheres to OSHA compliance standards by maintaining current Safety Data Sheets and sterilization/quality assurance procedures.

Participates in continuous quality improvement activities and community prevention activities such as health fairs, school screenings, Head Start, and Oral Health Programs.

Travels to rural, remote areas as required by the Region.

Conforms to safety policies, general housekeeping practices, and maintains a positive, respectful, culturally aware attitude toward patients and coworkers.

Maintains customer service, mission focus, and core values of respect, integrity, trust, compassion, and quality.

Observes Chugachmiut policies, strict employee confidentiality, and HIPAA regulations.

Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED.

Completion of a Dental Assistant Training Program or Dental Assistant Certification preferred.

One to two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of experience and training.

Current CPR certification or certification within six months after hire.

Experience working with Alaska Natives and/or other Native Americans preferred.

Hours of Work Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with one hour for lunch. Chugachmiut maintains a drug/alcohol‑free and non‑smoking work environment.
