General Engineering Tech I/II (Job ID 2503402) We are seeking a motivated and skilled General Engineering Tech to join our maintenance team to support the daily operation, repair, and improvement of our state infrastructure. In this role, you will assist engineers and maintenance staff with inspections, troubleshooting, project support, and hands‑on technical tasks that keep our roadways and operations running safely and efficiently. Salary

General Engineering Tech I (A19): $48,244 – $76,028 annually

General Engineering Tech II (A20): $51,158 – $81,351 annually

Minimum Salary: $48,244.00

Maximum Salary: $81,351.00

Anticipated Starting Salary: $60,000 – $67,000 per year

Pay Basis and Status Yearly; FLSA Status: Nonexempt

Travel Yes, 5% of the time; Shift: Day; Location Flexibility: Onsite

Essential Duties for General Engineering Tech I

Identifies, analyzes, and implements solutions for complex maintenance problems.

Inspects construction and routine and non‑routine contract maintenance methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications.

May train other employees.

Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Essential Duties for General Engineering Tech II

Inspects complex maintenance and construction‑related work to include hot mix overlay to ensure compliance with safety, laws and regulations, contract specifications and departmental procedures.

Prepares plans, specifications, and estimate (PS&E) using automated programs; reviews plans, enters data and updates, stores and maintains PS&E documents and files.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

High School Graduate or Equivalent in general high school studies.

Experience for General Engineering Tech I:

4 years in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by full‑time or prorated part‑time equivalent).

Experience for General Engineering Tech II:

6 years in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by full‑time or prorated part‑time equivalent).

Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

Competencies for General Engineering Tech I

Applicable inspection methods, procedures and techniques.

Materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance.

Maintenance concepts, methods, policies and requirements.

Using computers, applicable programs, applications, and systems.

Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others.

Competencies for General Engineering Tech II

Leading, assigning, reviewing, and monitoring the work of others.

Training in a classroom, office, or field environment.

Planning, coordinating and handling multiple projects within area of responsibility to meet short and long‑term deadlines.

Physical Requirements

Light work: Lift up to 20 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 10 lbs.

Standing – prolonged periods of time.

Walking – moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance/from one work site to another.

Talking – expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words.

This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre‑employment physical.

Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing. Please note that the Department of Transportation's Drug and Alcohol Testing Regulation – 49 CFR Part 40, at 40.151(e) – does not authorize “medical marijuana” under a state law to be a valid medical explanation for a positive drug test result for an employee in this position.

Required to work during emergency situations after hours, on weekends or holidays.

Required to work hours other than 8 to 5.

Required to work under exposure to inclement weather conditions.

Required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) provided by employer and comply with all safety requirements.

Must attend work regularly and observe approved work hours.
