Lactation Consultant Nurse (RN) , on a PRN basis. Under the generalsupervision of the Unit Director and with the authority of the Chief NursingOfficer, nurses deliver care to patients utilizing the nursing process ofassessment, planning, intervention, implementation, and evaluation, inaccordance with established philosophy. The Lactation Consultant Nurse specializes in breastfeeding and lactation support. QUALIFICATIONS:

Graduate of state approved RN School of Nursing, BSN Preferred. Current LouisianaLicensure as a Registered Nurse required. Current Certification by International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBCLC) BLS (CPR) uponhire NRP certificationwithin 6 months of employment ACLS certificationwithin 1-year post hire for those providing post-operative care PALScertification preferred within 1-year post hire of employment EXPERIENCE:

At least two yearsof nursing experience in labor & delivery, maternal child, is preferred. Preferred atleast 1-year experience in Lactation Consultation PRINCIPLE TASKS, DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supports the mothers and newborns with breastfeeding by providing lactation assessment, management, education, instruction and support. Performs a complete nursing assessment with aspecial focus on the adaptation to mother-baby dyad and transition toparenthood to establish and prioritize nursing diagnoses to create anindividualized, evidence-based plan of care. Assess human responses and adaptation to actualor potential health problems of the maternal, newborn, pediatric andgynecologic patient, family, and/or significant other. Provides patient-centered care to addressphysical, spiritual, psychosocial, developmental, cultural, andeducational needs of the mothers, newborns, and pediatric patients anddesignated family members in accordance with the plan of care, hospitalpolicy, state and national regulations and recommendations, and guidelinesof the professional organizations. Recognizes current and emerging high-riskobstetrical conditions and emergencies in order to respond timely andappropriately to provide the highest quality care for the mothers andnewborns. Stabilizes the high-risk maternal, newborn, orpediatric patients for transport as appropriate. Manages nursing care for obstetrical patientswith common complications of the perinatal period. Administers high-risk medications in accordancewith established protocols, policies and procedures to obstetricalpatients to promote optimal maternal newborn outcomes. Identifies patient and family education needs andin collaboration with other disciplines initiates’ education needsaccording to the age of the patient. Provides appropriate referrals and individualizedinformation regarding post-discharge community resources Communicates with patients, families, andmultidisciplinary team members, both verbally and in writing, to enhanceteamwork and promote safety, security, and improved maternal newborn,gynecologic and pediatric outcomes. Delegates nursing care to licensed and unlicensedstaff based on the staff member’s knowledge, education, competency andability to successfully perform the task/assignment. Participates in discharge planning; providesinstruction to patient/family. Maintains and promotes professional standards anddevelopment by participating in in-services, committees, staff meetingsand department and hospital performance improvement activities. Serve on the Safe Birth Initiative and GIFT taskforce. Assisting in chart auditing, attending meetings, providing andpartaking in education required, and inputting data for designation. Plans, implements, supervises, and evaluatesneeds of the breastfeeding infant. Provides consultative services to mothers duringprenatal, antenatal, and postpartum phase as needed. Provides support, education, and resources asneeded to the breastfeeding mom during infant’s hospitalization, withfollow up as needed after discharge Assists Maternal Child staff with tasks as needed(assessments, first breastfeeding visits, discharges)
