The City of Saint Charles Human Resources Department is currently recruiting for the position of Building Construction Inspector. The purpose of this position is to inspect, manage, and approve Private Development in compliance with design plans, specifications, engineering standards, and ICC building codes.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Inspects, manages, and approves the construction or repair of sanitary sewer, storm sewer, water main, street construction, and other appurtenances as related to improvements for compliance with design specifications, plans, codes, standards and contracts.
Performs construction & building inspections on new structures and existing structures for building codes, plumbing codes, mechanical codes, electrical codes, handicapped accessibility requirements and city ordinances.
As delegated by Supervisors, manages the processing of demolition permits, and performs and coordinates all relevant inspection activity.
Reviews permit applications and issues permits administered by the Engineering and Community Development Departments.
Coordinates activities and work schedules with utility companies, contractors, property owners and other City Departments.
Resolves conflicts, provides information, and responds to inquiries from citizens, contractors, staff, and the general public regarding Private Development.
Prepares correspondence, field notes, maps, permits, brochures, memos, etc., related to construction inspection.
Notifies builders, contractors, homeowners, tenants and business owners of code violations.
Minimum Training and Experience Required
Vocational or technical training in building codes, zoning codes, property maintenance enforcement, building inspections, or Associate's degree in Civil Engineering Technology or other related field
Three years general building construction and/or public works construction inspection experience
Ability to read and understand design drawings, specifications, and other related documents
ICC Residential and Commercial Building Inspector certifications required within one year of hire date.
Ability to perform duties in active construction zones following proper safety protocols
Ability to communicate orally and in writing with contractors, City personnel, and the general public
Valid motor vehicle operator's license required
Any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, registrations and abilities
Work Environment
Generally works in safe and comfortable conditions but frequently exposed to construction and natural site environmental factors such as temperature variations or extremes, odors, toxic agents, noise, wetness, machinery, electrical currents and/or dust which may cause discomfort and risk of injury. Travel between locations of varying environments is required with a frequent need to individually traverse upon construction and/or natural sites.
