Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent and certification (e.g., CTWCS)

Preferred Qualifications

1‑2 years tree care experience working in a landscape

Formal education in forestry, natural resource management, and/or arboriculture

Position Summary This is a manual labor position on a tree care crew, involving the safe operation of equipment such as mini skid steers, skid steers, manual transmission tractors, dump trucks, bucket trucks, and chainsaws. The individual will assist with maintenance, pruning, removal, and cleanup of trees on campus and will receive training in aerial work, bucket truck operation, tree climbing, and technical tree cutting and removal techniques. This role reports directly to the Urban Forester.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and/or Competencies

2 years of tree care/maintenance work

Knowledge of International Society of Arboriculture specifications for tree work

Possess a CDL B License

Experience operating equipment including manual transmission tractor, skid steer, mini skid steer, chipper, chainsaws, and dump trucks

Tree knowledge to include identification, care, and cultivation

Ability to control lowering ropes for tree climbers and bucket truck workers

Have the ability to use a larger chainsaw to buck logs and notch trees for removal

Understand and follow specific oral and written instructions

Physical Demands

Manual labor job for an 8‑hour shift, 5 days a week

Lifts 75 lbs frequently throughout the day

Stand, stoop, bend, lift, squat, and work with hands above head

Work from a standard and extended ladder

Ability to work from heights

Duties/Responsibilities

Tree care and maintenance of campus trees (75%)

Drive dump trucks to pick up debris and dump debris in another location

Operate chainsaws and equipment associated with tree work performed on campus

Work with and assist Grounds Department Tree Surgeons on tree work needing to be completed; assist with any aspect of tree work deemed necessary to complete required work on campus

Respond to after‑hour tree emergencies and storm‑related issues (10%)

Perform aerial tree work up to 75 feet with supervision (removing branches or trees from the bucket truck) (10%)

Apply fertilizers and pesticides associated with tree maintenance

Assist with scouting campus for issues of tree health, clearance and safety (5%)

Assist with work orders requesting tree work around campus

Emergency response for trees or inclement weather (5%)
